Style by Luis Miller
The idea of mastering perfectly loose curls can be more than intimidating. As summer is approaching, the beachy and wavy style feels just right in time. In this week’s blog post, we’ve asked our celebrity stylist, Luis Miller, how to get the perfect messy waves – no beach trip required.
I would start with completely dry and clean hair so you could rock the finished look for 3-4 days. I usually go over the strands with heat protectant spray and a paddle brush to give it more shine and smoothness. Thereafter, I start sectioning the hair from the neck up, approximately 1 inch wide sections. The most important thing is not how you section the hair, it’s how much you wrap around the wand. The bigger the section you wrap around, the looser the curls will be. For this particular style, one inch of hair should be just right. When it comes to choosing the wand of the curling iron, I’d choose the size 1- 1¼ for short hair and 1 ¼ – 1 ½ for longer manes.
If your hairstyles don’t tend to hold, you can spray the strands with a light hairspray before wrapping it around the curling iron. You want to alternate directions, meaning if you wrap one section back, you want to wrap the next one forward. Once you get to the front of your hair, those sections are extra important since they frame the face, and you want those to be wrapped away from it.
When hair is completely curled, I spray light hairspray all over and then comb it with a wide tooth comb. I finish with a styling product like Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray or Sea Salt Spray and shake it with my fingers. To maintain the look as long as possible, I would sleep with a high bun. Also, use a soft bristle brush and dry texturizing spray when needed.
