How-to

Morning after morning they transform our frizzy, wet strands into glamourous manes. In previous blog posts we’ve talked about the importance of using the right products for your hair but let’s not forget about the blow dryers. This week we discuss the importance of investing in a really good one. Fabio, why is using a good blow dryer important? –If you don’t have a good blow dryer, you can’t expect to have a good result. If you want a professional result you need a professional tool – simple as that. A good blow dryer should have the right power, speed and heat control. What could be the effect of using one of low quality? – The wrong type of blow dryer in combination with poor technique can be extremely damaging to your hair. If the blow dryer is too hot, it can cause severe damage to your hair and also make your color fade faster. On the other hand, if it’s not hot enough or too slow, you won’t get the smooth result you wish for. Remember to always hold the dryer at least one inch away from the hair on the brush. That will not only give you the smoothest hair, but also make your blowout last longer. In addition, (and most importantly) it will cause less damage to the strands. Also, if you don’t have a nozzle, it’s going to be really hard to get a smooth and professional result. How important is the heat? – The heat of the blow dryer is very important and should be adapted to your specific hair type.  If you have full and curly hair, you want to remove water with heat and fast speed. But if your hair is finer it’s good to slow down the process, with a lower heat, so you have enough time to build up the volume and get the results you wish for. Your blow dryer should also have a button for cold air. When blow drying hair, the warm air shapes the look and the cold hair seals it. Invest in a good blow dryer for the long haul. A cheap one will not only be a waste of money but will also cause unnecessary damage to your hair, and we definitely wouldn’t want that to happen! Julianne Hough Dull skin and eyes are two side effects of picking the wrong hair color for your face. But finding your perfect match can be anything but easy. Truth is, it’s so much more than picking a trendy tone or a color that you like. It has to go well with your entire look and if it does – it will make your skin glow and your eyes stand out. In today's blog post, our colorist Giuseppe Bicceri explains the importance of picking the right color for your specific look… “It’s not only about what the client wants or what she likes, it has go well with her lifestyle. I want to ensure my clients that they will look good until their next appointment. Therefore, I usually start a consultation with the question: How often are you willing to come to fix your color? For instance, if a client is going away for a trip, I have to find a color that matches her skin tone, complexion and looks good every day until she comes in for her next visit. What usually happens in the summer is that the skin tone and lifestyle changes, so you can not do the same color for every season. A hair color is highly personal and will change for everyone. I believe that everyone can have red hair– you just have to find the perfect shade for you. As hairdressers, we customize our services to deliver personalized results and I love that about my job.” – Giuseppe Bicceri, Fabio Scalia Soho Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York.   You visit the hair salon for a haircut, but just weeks after your appointment you notice that your ends don’t look good – they are split in two again. Most likely this happened because the scissors your hairdresser used were of lower quality and not well maintained. As a result, your ends were broken instead of properly cut. As one of the best salons in New York City, we personalize sessions that focus on the hair’s integrity and long-term growth. So how can you know if your service is cutting-edge? Don’t worry – we have you covered! Fabio, why are scissors important for a great haircut? – Scissors are important because they allow me, as a hairdresser, to give my clients a haircut with precision. They have to be extremely sharp to achieve the results that we want. My passion for the craftsmanship is what drives me daily and my goal is to provide you with a service that leaves you loving the hair you were born with. Is it true that you don't use clippers for men's cut? – I really try not to unless it’s a skin fade style. With scissors, I can control the technique in a way that a clipper can’t. Do scissors affect the health of hair? – Yes, absolutely. If the hair splits sooner than usual, your hairdresser has probably used the wrong pair of scissors. If you cut your hair with cheap or poorly maintained scissors, you don’t cut the hair – you break the hair. Personally, they are my most important tools and I wouldn’t allow anybody to cut with my scissors. If someone does, I can feel it. It’s comparable to when someone drives your car and moves your seat – it’s not the same. Where do your scissors come from? – I only use Japanese scissors. They are made from the same metal and technique as a samurai sword. In other words, they’re pretty sharp. Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York.   Photograph by Craig McDean, Styled by Melanie Ward for W Magazine As one of the best hair salons in New York City, recreating celebrity looks is a part of our everyday life. Trending right now is Margot Robbie's effortless chic waves seen on the cover of the latest issue of W magazine. The look feels just right in time and the style has been seen on other celebrities such as Kim K and Selena Gomez. Want waves like Margot Robbie? We've got you covered!  The COLOR: “I absolutely love this color on Margot Robbie since it’s beachy and chic all in one, yet a look needing low maintenance to upkeep”, says our colorist in Soho, Claudia Decicco. There are a lot of different factors to consider when deciding upon a new hair color. The integrity of your hair is our top priority and we value its condition, not just the appearance. Therefore, we always recommend you schedule a consultation with us before you begin your makeover. This look, in particular, is great for someone who has a darker root but wants to be blonde, since it’s a mix of the two techniques balayage and ombré. What makes this hair color great is that you can achieve the lighter tones at the ends and around the face, while your roots would still have dimension. Meaning the style doesn’t require touch up that often and would still look great the weeks in between visits to the salon. A light face framing would essentially contour & highlight the facial features such as eyes and cheekbones and the look is ideal for clients with medium to fine hair. Creating the STYLE: Depending on the condition of your hair, you’ll get this look by cutting your hair in a style with minimal to no layering at all. However, the length, depending on your features, has to be just right for this particular look. It can't be too long and it can't be too short – it has to be just right. To achieve the effortless, yet textured finish, you would start by prepping your wet strands with a simple Sea-Salt Spray. “The condition of your hair is, and will always be our top priority, so don’t forget the heat protectant spray before using hot tools,” says our celebrity stylist Luis Miller. When your hair is 100% dry, go over it with a 1-1&3/4” curling iron. Wrap random smaller sections of hair around to create a slight wave in your hair, leaving the ends more on the straight side. Finish the look by applying a Dry Texture Spray for hold, volume, and, of course, texture. The UPKEEP: As a luxury salon in New York, we’re all about long-term results. We want to educate you to make sure that you know how to take care of your hair and scalp in between visits. We have previously talked about how using the right products for your hair and taking care of your strands in between visits is crucial for its health. Did you know that using drugstore shampoo that can strip the color out very quickly? We definitely wouldn’t want that to happen! Want waves like Margot? In previous posts, we’ve talked about the importance of using high-quality products to maintain healthy hair. In addition to having the right products, what you eat also makes a huge impact on your hair and scalp’s condition. We have listed 10 nutritious foods below that will help you achieve the ultimate #hairgoals you’ve always aspired to. Fill up your kitchen with these nutrients to grow your healthiest hair ever. Walnuts Smoother skin, healthy hair and brighter eyes are a few of many benefits of eating walnuts. Walnuts are a terrific source of zinc, an ingredient known to strengthen hair follicles. Almonds Almonds eaten in moderation have proven to have a positive impact on human’s health. This also includes the condition of your strands. The nut is a great source of vitamin E which researchers say is particularly good for keeping your locks thick and lustrous. You heard it right – this gives you another reason to dive into that almond butter jar! Spinach Spinach is filled with nutritious ingredients such as sebum, iron, omega-3, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. All mentioned help keeping hair lustrous, shiny and hydrated. Salmon Besides from being a good source of protein, salmon is a rich source of Omega-3’s. These are anti-inflammatory and enable you to grow hair faster and keep it shiny and full. Eggs Eggs are packed with biotin, a B vitamin which improves the growth of the hair. You can also find biotin in almonds, salmon and

Maintaining a vibrant hair color can be a really tough challenge. The key to having gorgeously colored locks (and keeping them that way) is all about proper hair care in-between salon visits. This does not mean adding major steps into your beauty regimen. In fact, it all gets down to small lifestyle changes that anyone can do. Here are 6 ways that you can extend the life of your hair color. 1. Stop using shampoo every single day Washing your hair too often doesn’t only result in a dry and lifeless mane, but it can also make your hair color duller. The shampoo strips your hair of color and also all natural oils from your scalp that nourishes and keep the hair looking healthy. The same oils are the ones that help your strands to take color better. That being said, keep your color fresh by using shampoo only a few times a week. Find out if you are you making these common washing mistakes here. 2. Avoid hot tools Turning up the heat on your styling tools can be tempting when you want to achieve the ultimate #hairgoals. However, that heat could be the reason that your color is looking a bit dull. Excessive use of hot tools can make your color fade faster than you wish, so avoid them as much as possible. 3. Use the right products In a previous post, we talked about the 5 products your really need and why, but when it comes to color-treated hair, you might want to upgrade your hair care routine slightly. Dyed hair requires more attention, so invest in salon-graded products for colored hair. 4. Give pigmented products a try Today, a lot of brands offer hair products such as shampoo and conditioner designed to enhance the already existing shade of your hair. Depending on the current color, the products may contain marigold or yellow shades for golden blondes, violet shades for white blondes and so on. A pigmented product can be used weekly or biweekly for a fresher tone. 5. Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate When having your hair colored, it’s more important than ever to keep the strands deeply hydrated. Hydrated hair holds onto color better and helps it to produce more shine than thirsty, dehydrated locks. Replenish your hair’s moisture by using a deep conditioning mask once a week. 6. Consult with a professional Figuring out what best for your specific hair is not easy. And let us be honest – no one knows your locks better than your stylist. Make sure you get their opinion on the best products and what you should be using when you get home from the salon. Are you ready for a makeover? Are hair extensions the right thing for you, and why should you even consider it? Well, have you ever wondered how celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez, can go from a lob (long bob) to long mermaid hair overnight? The answer to this question is hair extensions. Nowadays, hair extensions are about so much more than just extending your hair to make it longer. Extensions can also add fullness, give you the ability to experiment with different styles (did you know that you can add fake bangs!?) and colors. In fact, that girl with the beautiful, long flowing locks that you were admiring yesterday could well have been using hair extensions. However, there are a couple of things that you may want to consider before your makeover. Down below we have listed four things you need to know before your makeover. Hair extensions tip #1 First of all, getting the color right is crucial. Most people don’t have only one shade of color in their hair – the shades tend to be mixed. Therefore, picking extensions with blended colors is usually preferred if you want more natural looking hair. Hair extensions tip #2 Another factor to consider before you put in hair extensions is how well you’re able to take care of your locks afterward. Your hair extensions should be treated in the same careful way as you would treat your own hair. Consult with your hairstylist to make sure you get the right type of products specifically for your hair type. It is also important that you go to follow up appointments with your stylist to make sure you treat your locks the right way to maintain your new look. Hair extensions tip #3 Let’s talk about quality. Great looking extensions should look perfectly natural and blend in with your own hair. At Fabio Scalia Salons, we use authentic human hair of the finest material to achieve the ultimate hair goals. Hair extensions tip #4 There are a lot of different methods on the market today and it’s easy to get lost in the jungle of clip-ins, micro rings, and tape. At Fabio Scalia Salon, we are proud to offer Great Lengths , with hair sourced from the temples of India. Great Lengths provides the most luxurious extensions on the market, made from ethically sourced, fully traceable non-chemically treated human hair. Find out more about this method here. No matter how much conditioner you use, your hair doesn’t seem to detangle. The messy bun has become a part of your everyday uniform and every time you’re styling your locks it takes forever. Your hair care routine has come to a point where easy and simple no longer exists. Does this sound familiar? Then maybe it’s time for a trim. Determining whether you need to get a haircut or not can be hard but don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! Here are 5 reasons why you should book your appointment today. 1. You’ve got split ends There comes a time when not even a mask or a serum can give your dry ends new life. Breakage and split ends are generally a sign that you should have scheduled an appointment with your hairstylist yesterday. 2. You can’t remember your last appointment You’re busy we get it! But to maintain healthy hair, you should ideally get a trim every 5-7 weeks. Waiting longer can result in split ends (reason number one), which makes it harder for your hair to grow since it’s splitting or breaking from the bottom up. 3. You need a new look Sometimes all you need is a haircut to refresh your entire style. Your hair is a major way of self-expression and let’s not forget that if you don’t like it, it’ll grow back (or you cheat with extensions). 4. Your hair tangles Your split ends create knots more and more often and your best weapon is the scissors. It’s hard to tame a frizzy mane, so give it a fix by a professional. 5. You have more bad hair days than good So you can’t remember the last time you woke up with a hairstyle that’s actually a style? Then it’s probably time for a trim. Styling your hair should be easy and if every morning is a hassle trying to fight your hair, the salon is probably worth a visit. Does this seem familiar? Book your appointment today here (Soho) or here (Brooklyn). How often can you really color your hair without damaging it? Find out here!

It’s that time of year when you can’t wait to get the right hair color for the summer. We’re all craving flawless color goals and whether you’re dreaming of adventurous rainbow locks or lighter tones, it’s safe to say that hair color is a major way of expressing yourself. Most people are aware that coloring your hair does no good to the quality of it. But let’s face the fact that a little damage won’t stop us from getting the shade of our dreams. But it leaves us all with one major question: How much can our manes take? Truth is, there are no rules for how often you can color your hair – it all comes down to a couple of factors that you should consider before your makeover. First of all, it depends on the current condition of your hair. If it’s is in good shape, you can touch up the color more often. If you’re thinking about changing your hair color completely, you should make sure that your hair is in its best possible condition. That being said, using the right products for your specific hair type is key. (Read more about the 5 products you really need for healthy hair here.) Another factor that affects how often you can color the hair is the quality of the products. This is also one of the main reasons why you shouldn’t dye your hair at home. At Fabio Scalia Salons, we use products of highest quality to cause the least amount of damage as possible. Also, there is a reason why hair stylists must complete several years of schooling! The color theory and chemistry is very detailed and differs for every single hair type. But what you can do at home is to take care of your new hair color. Investing in color preserving products and tools are crucial and can help beat unnecessary color fade and damage. So, as a rule of thumb, listen to your hair (and your colorist) if you think you’re dyeing your hair too much. Knowing your hair type, quality, and how much it can handle can be challenging but we’ve got you covered! Schedule a consultation today at 212-343- 0523.

It’s easy to get lost in the jungle of hair products. Styling your hair should be easy, and with the right hair products, the right amount, and yes a little bit of time you can get the results you wish for. Using too many products can actually have the opposite effect. The more products you use, the more buildup you’ll acquire on your scalp. Buildup itself clogs pores and does no good for your hair. Consistent with this idea, less is sometimes actually more. We need to go back to the basics: cleansing, hydrating, protecting, styling, and finishing – here are the five essentials you really need for amazing hair. Shampoo & Conditioner Probably a no brainer but picking the right shampoo and conditioner is crucial for having great hair. It doesn’t only help you build a stronger foundation, but can also help you restore moisture if your hair has been damaged by color, chemical processing or heat styling. Consult with your hairdresser what works best for your specific hair type.  And if your hair doesn't have any specific needs you can use a shampoo/conditioner from Oribe Signature, or label M honey & oat shampoo and conditioner Heat Protector A golden rule for healthy hair is spelt heat protection. The product forms a protective barrier over the cuticle on the hair strand which prevents heat damage and enables you to maintain a healthy mane. Prep your locks with this game changer every time before you use any type of styling tools. Imperial blow out from Oribe and heat protection spray from Label.m are few of our suggestions. Finishing Spray So you managed to get yourself an amazing hairstyle. Now what? Invest in a good finishing spray to get the texture you want and to make your style last longer. The impermeable spray from Oribe will protect your hair from humidity and Label.m Sea Salt Spray to create texture and natural waves. Hair Mask Either if it’s to add moisture, fight frizz or build strength – a hair mask should always be a part of your hair care routine. You want to ensure that you’re giving your hair the perfect base to create any look and get the most out of your styling products. To maintain healthy hair, you should treat yourself with a hair mask at least every ten days. Consult your hairstylist before choosing a product, but we suggest Oribe Masque for Beautiful Color or label.m Intense Mask for moisturizing. Are you making these 5 common hair washing mistakes? Find out how not to make them anymore.
