How-to

Style by Luis Miller The idea of mastering perfectly loose curls can be more than intimidating. As summer is approaching, the beachy and wavy style feels just right in time. In this week’s blog post, we’ve asked our celebrity stylist, Luis Miller, how to get the perfect messy waves – no beach trip required. I would start with completely dry and clean hair so you could rock the finished look for 3-4 days. I usually go over the strands with heat protectant spray and a paddle brush to give it more shine and smoothness. Thereafter, I start sectioning the hair from the neck up, approximately  1 inch wide sections. The most important thing is not how you section the hair, it’s how much you wrap around the wand. The bigger the section you wrap around, the looser the curls will be. For this particular style, one inch of hair should be just right. When it comes to choosing the wand of the curling iron, I’d choose the size 1- 1¼ for short hair and 1 ¼ - 1 ½  for longer manes. If your hairstyles don’t tend to hold, you can spray the strands with a light hairspray before wrapping it around the curling iron. You want to alternate directions, meaning if you wrap one section back, you want to wrap the next one forward. Once you get to the front of your hair, those sections are extra important since they frame the face, and you want those to be wrapped away from it. When hair is completely curled, I spray light hairspray all over and then comb it with a wide tooth comb. I finish with a styling product like Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray or Sea Salt Spray and shake it with my fingers. To maintain the look as long as possible, I would sleep with a high bun. Also, use a soft bristle brush and dry texturizing spray when needed. – Luis Miller Schedule your appointment with us today in Soho Schedule your appointment with us today in Brooklyn Heights Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York. We’re welcoming the warmer season with open arms. But let’s be honest; Our hair couldn’t be less excited about the arrival of warmer temperatures. In this week’s blog post, Fabio Scalia covers the two hair products that are sure to become your summer saviors this year. “The first product I’d recommend all my clients to invest in for summer is the Leave-In Conditioner from label.m. It’s an aloe vera based product that smoothes and strengthens all hair types. It helps fighting frizz and hydrates the strands at the same time (in summer times hydration is key for a healthy mane.) You apply a small amount to freshly shampooed hair, and massage it towards the ends for added control. Comb through and style as desired. This is also a great product to bring to the beach as you can apply it right after a swim. Another summer savior is the Mystify Restyling Spray from Oribe which prolongs your style while protecting your strands at the same time. This hydrating spray reactivates yesterday’s products to restyle while nourishing, strengthening and shielding against thermal damage. It’s a great product to have in your purse to give your style a boost. It also works as a heat protector which makes it a must-have for warmer temperatures. “ – Fabio Scalia Schedule your appointment with us today in Soho Schedule your appointment with us today in Brooklyn Heights Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York. Gisele Bündchen photographed by Patrick Demarchelier for Vogue Australia Whether you desire long, beachy hair for summer, or a fuller bob, hair extensions could be a great way to instantly achieve the look you want. At Fabio Scalia Salons, we offer Great Lengths Extensions – the most luxurious extensions on the market, made from ethically sourced, fully traceable non-chemically treated human hair. In this week’s blog post, our Soho hairdresser Elena Azzopardi guides us through the jungle of extensions. “A lot of people think that extensions imply a drastic change. Truth is, It doesn’t have to be like that at all. Let’s say you got a bad haircut and you want to fill out the sides, or you want to create a different shape of the hairstyle. In those cases extensions could be a great option. Also, it allows us, as hairstylists, to play around with colors to add dimension to the final look. It’s not about creating big, long hair (even though it could be), but enhancing what you already have. I love being able to do that for my clients. If a client has very fine hair, you would need to use smaller bonds to make the blending of the hair more natural. Otherwise, it’s a risk that they get too heavy on the scalp. By cutting them into smaller pieces, I can customize the extensions which will lead to a better result. A set of extensions lasts somewhere between 3-5 months but could be stretched until 6 if they are taken care of correctly. I developed an interest for extensions when I lived and worked in Europe, but when I came here, to the US, I decided to take it to the next level and began my Great Lengths training. What makes Great Lengths stand out from other brands is the keratin bonds that have the same structure as our own hair, which allows each extension to fuse with the natural hair on a molecular level, without the risk of damage. With hair sourced from the temples of India, Great Lengths is the industry’s top rated leader in extensions.“ – Elena Azzopardi, Soho Is it time to get extensions? At Fabio Scalia Salon, we want to help you decide on the final crowning detail of your look – yes, we’re talking about the hairstyle. From chignons to loose curls – brides have endless styling opportunities for the big day and picking only one can be hard. Therefore, we want to help you to be loyal to yourself and find your perfect match. “A wedding is such a big moment and a day many women have been dreaming about since they were little girls. It doesn't matter how many gowns, updos or make-up looks you’ve seen in the past – a wedding is highly personal and so should the look of the bride be. It’s important to always have the entire look in mind. I like to think about the bride as 100%, so if the dress is already 80%, you would have to go for a more simple hairdo to create a balance. “                                                                                                                         – Giuseppe Bicceri   We’re happy to introduce the series “A Dose of I Do” – a tool for all the brides-to-be to get inspired by and learn from. Morning after morning they transform our frizzy, wet strands into glamourous manes. In previous blog posts we’ve talked about the importance of using the right products for your hair but let’s not forget about the blow dryers. This week we discuss the importance of investing in a really good one. Fabio, why is using a good blow dryer important? –If you don’t have a good blow dryer, you can’t expect to have a good result. If you want a professional result you need a professional tool – simple as that. A good blow dryer should have the right power, speed and heat control. What could be the effect of using one of low quality? – The wrong type of blow dryer in combination with poor technique can be extremely damaging to your hair. If the blow dryer is too hot, it can cause severe damage to your hair and also make your color fade faster. On the other hand, if it’s not hot enough or too slow, you won’t get the smooth result you wish for. Remember to always hold the dryer at least one inch away from the hair on the brush. That will not only give you the smoothest hair, but also make your blowout last longer. In addition, (and most importantly) it will cause less damage to the strands. Also, if you don’t have a nozzle, it’s going to be really hard to get a smooth and professional result. How important is the heat? – The heat of the blow dryer is very important and should be adapted to your specific hair type.  If you have full and curly hair, you want to remove water with heat and fast speed. But if your hair is finer it’s good to slow down the process, with a lower heat, so you have enough time to build up the volume and get the results you wish for. Your blow dryer should also have a button for cold air. When blow drying hair, the warm air shapes the look and the cold hair seals it. Invest in a good blow dryer for the long haul. A cheap one will not only be a waste of money but will also cause unnecessary damage to your hair, and we definitely wouldn’t want that to happen! Julianne Hough Dull skin and eyes are two side effects of picking the wrong hair color for your face. But finding your perfect match can be anything but easy. Truth is, it’s so much more than picking a trendy tone or a color that you like. It has to go well with your entire look and if it does – it will make your skin glow and your eyes stand out. In today's blog post, our colorist Giuseppe Bicceri explains the importance of picking the right color for your specific look… “It’s not only about what the client wants or what she likes, it has go well with her lifestyle. I want to ensure my clients that they will look good until their next appointment. Therefore, I usually start a consultation with the question: How often are you willing to come to fix your color? For instance, if a client is going away for a trip, I have to find a color that matches her skin tone, complexion and looks good every day until she comes in for her next visit. What usually happens in the summer is that the skin tone and lifestyle changes, so you can not do the same color for every season. A hair color is highly personal and will change for everyone. I believe that everyone can have red hair– you just have to find the perfect shade for you. As hairdressers, we customize our services to deliver personalized results and I love that about my job.” – Giuseppe Bicceri, Fabio Scalia Soho Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York.   You visit the hair salon for a haircut, but just weeks after your appointment you notice that your ends don’t look good – they are split in two again. Most likely this happened because the scissors your hairdresser used were of lower quality and not well maintained. As a result, your ends were broken instead of properly cut. As one of the best salons in New York City, we personalize sessions that focus on the hair’s integrity and long-term growth. So how can you know if your service is cutting-edge? Don’t worry – we have you covered! Fabio, why are scissors important for a great haircut? – Scissors are important because they allow me, as a hairdresser, to give my clients a haircut with precision. They have to be extremely sharp to achieve the results that we want. My passion for the craftsmanship is what drives me daily and my goal is to provide you with a service that leaves you loving the hair you were born with. Is it true that you don't use clippers for men's cut? – I really try not to unless it’s a skin fade style. With scissors, I can control the technique in a way that a clipper can’t. Do scissors affect the health of hair? – Yes, absolutely. If the hair splits sooner than usual, your hairdresser has probably used the wrong pair of scissors. If you cut your hair with cheap or poorly maintained scissors, you don’t cut the hair – you break the hair. Personally, they are my most important tools and I wouldn’t allow anybody to cut with my scissors. If someone does, I can feel it. It’s comparable to when someone drives your car and moves your seat – it’s not the same. Where do your scissors come from? – I only use Japanese scissors. They are made from the same metal and technique as a samurai sword. In other words, they’re pretty sharp. Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York.   Photograph by Craig McDean, Styled by Melanie Ward for W Magazine As one of the best hair salons in New York City, recreating celebrity looks is a part of our everyday life. Trending right now is Margot Robbie's effortless chic waves seen on the cover of the latest issue of W magazine. The look feels just right in time and the style has been seen on other celebrities such as Kim K and Selena Gomez. Want waves like Margot Robbie? We've got you covered!  The COLOR: “I absolutely love this color on Margot Robbie since it’s beachy and chic all in one, yet a look needing low maintenance to upkeep”, says our colorist in Soho, Claudia Decicco. There are a lot of different factors to consider when deciding upon a new hair color. The integrity of your hair is our top priority and we value its condition, not just the appearance. Therefore, we always recommend you schedule a consultation with us before you begin your makeover. This look, in particular, is great for someone who has a darker root but wants to be blonde, since it’s a mix of the two techniques balayage and ombré. What makes this hair color great is that you can achieve the lighter tones at the ends and around the face, while your roots would still have dimension. Meaning the style doesn’t require touch up that often and would still look great the weeks in between visits to the salon. A light face framing would essentially contour & highlight the facial features such as eyes and cheekbones and the look is ideal for clients with medium to fine hair. Creating the STYLE: Depending on the condition of your hair, you’ll get this look by cutting your hair in a style with minimal to no layering at all. However, the length, depending on your features, has to be just right for this particular look. It can't be too long and it can't be too short – it has to be just right. To achieve the effortless, yet textured finish, you would start by prepping your wet strands with a simple Sea-Salt Spray. “The condition of your hair is, and will always be our top priority, so don’t forget the heat protectant spray before using hot tools,” says our celebrity stylist Luis Miller. When your hair is 100% dry, go over it with a 1-1&3/4” curling iron. Wrap random smaller sections of hair around to create a slight wave in your hair, leaving the ends more on the straight side. Finish the look by applying a Dry Texture Spray for hold, volume, and, of course, texture. The UPKEEP: As a luxury salon in New York, we’re all about long-term results. We want to educate you to make sure that you know how to take care of your hair and scalp in between visits. We have previously talked about how using the right products for your hair and taking care of your strands in between visits is crucial for its health. Did you know that using drugstore shampoo that can strip the color out very quickly? We definitely wouldn’t want that to happen! Want waves like Margot? In previous posts, we’ve talked about the importance of using high-quality products to maintain healthy hair. In addition to having the right products, what you eat also makes a huge impact on your hair and scalp’s condition. We have listed 10 nutritious foods below that will help you achieve the ultimate #hairgoals you’ve always aspired to. Fill up your kitchen with these nutrients to grow your healthiest hair ever. Walnuts Smoother skin, healthy hair and brighter eyes are a few of many benefits of eating walnuts. Walnuts are a terrific source of zinc, an ingredient known to strengthen hair follicles. Almonds Almonds eaten in moderation have proven to have a positive impact on human’s health. This also includes the condition of your strands. The nut is a great source of vitamin E which researchers say is particularly good for keeping your locks thick and lustrous. You heard it right – this gives you another reason to dive into that almond butter jar! Spinach Spinach is filled with nutritious ingredients such as sebum, iron, omega-3, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. All mentioned help keeping hair lustrous, shiny and hydrated. Salmon Besides from being a good source of protein, salmon is a rich source of Omega-3’s. These are anti-inflammatory and enable you to grow hair faster and keep it shiny and full. Maintaining a vibrant hair color can be a really tough challenge. The key to having gorgeously colored locks (and keeping them that way) is all about proper hair care in-between salon visits. This does not mean adding major steps into your beauty regimen. In fact, it all gets down to small lifestyle changes that anyone can do. Here are 6 ways that you can extend the life of your hair color. 1. Stop using shampoo every single day Washing your hair too often doesn’t only result in a dry and lifeless mane, but it can also make your hair color duller. The shampoo strips your hair of color and also all natural oils from your scalp that nourishes and keep the hair looking healthy. The same oils are the ones that help your strands to take color better. That being said, keep your color fresh by using shampoo only a few times a week. Find out if you are you making these common washing mistakes here. 2. Avoid hot tools Turning up the heat on your styling tools can be tempting when you want to achieve the ultimate #hairgoals. However, that heat could be the reason that your color is looking a bit dull. Excessive use of hot tools can make your color fade faster than you wish, so avoid them as much as possible. 3. Use the right products In a previous post, we talked about the 5 products your really need and why, but when it comes to color-treated hair, you might want to upgrade your hair care routine slightly. Dyed hair requires more attention, so invest in salon-graded products for colored hair. 4. Give pigmented products a try Today, a lot of brands offer hair products such as shampoo and conditioner designed to enhance the already existing shade of your hair. Depending on the current color, the products may contain marigold or yellow shades for golden blondes, violet shades for white blondes and so on. A pigmented product can be used weekly or biweekly for a fresher tone. 5. Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate When having your hair colored, it’s more important than ever to keep the strands deeply hydrated. Hydrated hair holds onto color better and helps it to produce more shine than thirsty, dehydrated locks. Replenish your hair’s moisture by using a deep conditioning mask once a week. 6. Consult with a professional Figuring out what best for your specific hair is not easy. And let us be honest – no one knows your locks better than your stylist. Make sure you get their opinion on the best products and what you should be using when you get home from the salon. Are you ready for a makeover?
