Do you want to go lighter with your hair color without damaging your locks? Maintaining the condition of colored hair is no easy feat. That’s why we’re excited about this new game changer: Wellaplex. In this week’s blog post, Senior Colorist Rocco Crisci breaks down the treatment and how it works. First things first: in order to get great color, you need healthy hair. If a client comes in and wants lighter hair, I most likely have to compromise on the hair’s texture in order to lift it and finally get the result I want. However, if I incorporate Wellaplex into the service, it not only strengthens the bonds but also rebuilds the structure of the strands broken down by the chemical treatment. This means that I and other colorists are now, thanks to this treatment, able to receive results we’ve only dreamt of before. To be used in combination with color services or as a stand alone treatment, Wellaplex helps improve the condition of your hair. It’s for stressed, weak hair or to be used whenever you feel like you need an extra boost. At Fabio Scalia Salons, we use Wella color, so using Wellaplex along with it makes total sense. The treatment is divided into three different steps where the first two are done in the salon: N°1: THE BOND MAKER The first in-salon step is to be used in combination with color or lightening services to help create bonds within the hair. N°2: THE BOND STABILIZER Next step would be to use the bond stabilizer to further strengthen the bonds, build up the structure of the hair and re-balance the pH. N°1 and N°2 are used in-salon only. N°3: THE HAIR STABILIZER The final step is the take home product to use in between visits to the salon. It helps keeping hair strong, soft and smooth. The hair stabilizer is available in our salons and should preferably be used once a week. Is it time for a treatment? As one of the best hair salons in New York City, the latest trends are always infused into our approach ensuring that our service is cutting-edge. Recreating celebrity looks is a part of our everyday lives as hairdressers. Trending right now is Jessica Alba’s glamorous side swept curls seen on the cover of the latest issue of InStyle magazine. In this week’s blog post, stylist Isabel Vera breaks it down step by step how to get this classy hairstyle. When creating a look like this, the preparation is a key element. To achieve the texture, lovely volume and defined silhouette, we will use Label.m products throughout the process. When the hair is wet, you would start by applying volume mouse and heat protector all over the hair, starting from roots to the ends. Thereafter dry hair completely using a blowdryer and grooming brush to create the unique softness of this hairstyle. When the hair is completely dry and brushed through, the next step would be to use a curling iron of smaller size to create the glamorous and tight curls we want for this look. Once a section is curled, you pin it up and let it cool off. By doing this, the curls get tighter and also last longer. When all pinned curls have cooled off, you would take the pins out, apply texturizing spray and then use your fingers to pull back and open up the curls for a gorgeous and wild look. Comb through the hair and pull it aside using the grooming brush to keep a polished, clean and tight look. Secure with bobby pins to make sure the style stays in place all day long. Comb your bangs and the hair on top of your head softly to the side. And voilà! Want curls like Jessica? Does your rinsing routine make a difference on your hair’s condition? Spoiler alert: it does! Truth is, rinsing your hair correctly can save your strands a lot of damage. In this week’s blog post, Fabio Scalia explains the importance of having a great routine. Fabio, why is rinsing your hair after a swim in the water so important? – Most people know that the sun is very damaging for the hair but fewer people know that chlorine and saltwater can be even worse. Saltwater and chlorine work as dehydrating agents and in combination with the sun, it can cause some serious damage to your hair. So if you can rinse it out immediately after you take a swim, it will make a significant difference on the health of your hair. Also, your color is more likely to last longer. In what ways does it affect your hair color? – Most people are aware that when salt is on your body, it tends to tan faster. Same goes with hair and saltwater. Therefore, it’s important to rinse your strands after a dip in the ocean if you want to maintain the color, shine and health of your hair. What else can be done to maintain the hair color? – If you want your hair color to last longer, I suggest you end every shower with a cold water rinse. Besides from being a very effective wake-up call, it’s a great way to give your mane that extra boost. It’s beneficial for your scalp as it improves blood circulation and it will make your hair shinier. Any final tips or tricks? – A beach trip is a perfect opportunity to apply product to the hair to give it that extra boost it needs during summer. So ideally, you would rinse your hair after a swim, apply deep conditioning product and let it sit throughout the day for best possible results. Jennifer Aniston by Alexei Hay for Elle Magazine It used to be that when you reached a certain age you were destined for your mother's haircut. But is there such thing as an age appropriate haircut? In this week’s blog post, Fabio Scalia explains if the relation between the length of your hair and your age in number should matter. “I’m not a believer that women should shorten their hair to correspond with the number of birthdays they’ve celebrated. Your age shouldn’t be associated with the length of your hair. It’s more about your look and how you carry it. Sure, when you see a 50+ woman with hair down to her waist, all you see is probably very long hair. But it would also be very long on a young teenage girl. Instead of thinking whether your haircut is age appropriate or not, you should instead think if it’s look appropriate. Does your haircut go well with your facial features? With your personal style? With your career? There’s where I’d put my focus. A haircut is, however, a way to play with trends and a great style can make you feel up to date and current. As your hair ages, the texture, color and quality may change and those factors should be taken into consideration when cutting and coloring your hair. You can wear a beautiful dress, but if you feel uncomfortable with it, you will look ridiculous. Same goes with hair. That’s why my final suggestion is to consult with your stylist to come up with a style that will make you look and feel like the best version of yourself! Is your haircut appropriate for your look? Image Source: Cosmopolitan / James White Even if you’ve loved your long locks for decades, spotting a pixie cut can inspire you to do a major chop. However, there are a few things to take into consideration before your makeover. In this week’s blog post, we talk about the things you need to know before your appointment. “I recommend all my clients to think long and hard before they decide whether to cut their hair short or not. But also remember that change can be good and it’s just hair – it will grow back (or you can cheat with extensions wink wink). It is important to remember that shorter hair can be harder to style. But there’s also freedom with having less hair to deal with on a daily basis. As top hairdressers in New York City, we make sure you leave our chairs with confidence and the knowledge of how to style your new ’do. My philosophy is that anyone can have short hair – you just need to find a balance with the rest of your look. Your hairstyle needs to go well with your entire look including style, facial features, texture of hair and lifestyle. As curators of hair, we are committed to perfecting the way women wash, style, wear and live with their hair and a shorter hairstyle most definitely needs a little more maintenance than a longer one. Therefore, it’s extra important that the right products are being used to get best possible results. A lot of people think that short hair is just for a small number of people. I would say it’s the opposite. There are so many varieties and shapes of short hair - it’s all about finding the right look for you! By playing with color, you can enhance the shape of your cut. For instance, if you want more volume, you play with the contrast between light and dark colors.” – Fabio Scalia Is it time for a chop? Style by Luis Miller The idea of mastering perfectly loose curls can be more than intimidating. As summer is approaching, the beachy and wavy style feels just right in time. In this week’s blog post, we’ve asked our celebrity stylist, Luis Miller, how to get the perfect messy waves – no beach trip required. I would start with completely dry and clean hair so you could rock the finished look for 3-4 days. I usually go over the strands with heat protectant spray and a paddle brush to give it more shine and smoothness. Thereafter, I start sectioning the hair from the neck up, approximately 1 inch wide sections. The most important thing is not how you section the hair, it’s how much you wrap around the wand. The bigger the section you wrap around, the looser the curls will be. For this particular style, one inch of hair should be just right. When it comes to choosing the wand of the curling iron, I’d choose the size 1- 1¼ for short hair and 1 ¼ - 1 ½ for longer manes. If your hairstyles don’t tend to hold, you can spray the strands with a light hairspray before wrapping it around the curling iron. You want to alternate directions, meaning if you wrap one section back, you want to wrap the next one forward. Once you get to the front of your hair, those sections are extra important since they frame the face, and you want those to be wrapped away from it. When hair is completely curled, I spray light hairspray all over and then comb it with a wide tooth comb. I finish with a styling product like Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray or Sea Salt Spray and shake it with my fingers. To maintain the look as long as possible, I would sleep with a high bun. Also, use a soft bristle brush and dry texturizing spray when needed. – Luis Miller Schedule your appointment with us today in Soho Schedule your appointment with us today in Brooklyn Heights Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York. Style by Luis Miller So you want to grow out your haircut or try to achieve mermaid-worthy long locks? Then these simple hair hacks are for you. In this week’s blog post, we reveal three easy tricks to grow that beautiful hair you’ve always dreamed of. Get regular trims This might seem a bit ironic, but to achieve healthy and gorgeous hair the scissors are your best friend, and getting regular trims is a must-do. Getting your hair cut prevents split ends from working their way up the strands and saves you from that major chop. “Waiting too long between your appointments will cause split ends and breakage higher up on the strand. This will result in your stylist needing to give you a shorter style than if you get consistent trims,” says Fabio Scalia. Use the right products We’ve said it before, and will probably say it again – using high-quality products is crucial for achieving and maintaining your desired look. We get it – it’s easy to get lost in the jungle of hair products, which is why you should consult with your stylist about the right products for your hair type and style. Styling your hair should be easy, and with the right hair products, the right amount, and yes a little bit of time you can get the results you wish for. In previous posts we’ve talked about the 5 hair products you need and why. Switch the placement of your ponytail Switching up your pony placement is an easy move that can help maintain the integrity of your strands. This allows your hair to continue to grow out healthy and strong. It’s time to get real. We put our hair through a lot: color, sun, heat styling… the list can go on and on. We might be guilty of prematurely thinning our hair without even knowing it. At Fabio Scalia Salons, we focus on the hair’s integrity and long-term growth and we want your hair to live up to its full potential. Therefore, we’ve broken down 4 easy steps to follow for thick, healthy, breathtaking hair. TAKE SUPPLEMENTS It's not just genetics that have it out for your hair. Stress, diet and environmental toxins are all factors proven to compromise the health of your hair. Caring for your strands from the inside out is just as important as what products you’re using. At Fabio Scalia Salons, we offer our clients Nutrafol, a 100% drug-free supplement to prevent hair thinning. It’s perfect for those who find it hard to cover all vitamins needed for optimal nutrition in their daily diet. CUT DOWN ON TENSION HEAT STYLING Want beautiful hair? Of course, you do! However, before your hair can be beautiful, it has to be healthy, so try to only use hot tools occasionally. You’ll thank yourself later! Not giving your hair a break from heat can speed up the thinning process and will leave your strands fine and flat in the long run. Also, hairstyles that are too tight will pull your hair at the roots and eventually cause breakage. INVEST IN A SCALP TREATMENT Give your hair some extra TLC, and treat yourself to a scalp treatment every now and then. At our Soho and Brooklyn Heights locations, we offer our clients top treatments from brands such as Oribe, Milbon and Phyto. These treatments penetrate the strands deeply, enhance your color and leave you with not only gorgeous, but also healthy hair. HAVE A HEALTHY AND BALANCED DIET In previous blog posts, we’ve talked of the importance of having a healthy and balanced diet for your hair. Make sure to fill up your kitchen with these nutrients to grow your healthiest hair ever. We’re welcoming the warmer season with open arms. But let’s be honest; Our hair couldn’t be less excited about the arrival of warmer temperatures. In this week’s blog post, Fabio Scalia covers the two hair products that are sure to become your summer saviors this year. “The first product I’d recommend all my clients to invest in for summer is the Leave-In Conditioner from label.m. It’s an aloe vera based product that smoothes and strengthens all hair types. It helps fighting frizz and hydrates the strands at the same time (in summer times hydration is key for a healthy mane.) You apply a small amount to freshly shampooed hair, and massage it towards the ends for added control. Comb through and style as desired. This is also a great product to bring to the beach as you can apply it right after a swim. Another summer savior is the Mystify Restyling Spray from Oribe which prolongs your style while protecting your strands at the same time. This hydrating spray reactivates yesterday’s products to restyle while nourishing, strengthening and shielding against thermal damage. It’s a great product to have in your purse to give your style a boost. It also works as a heat protector which makes it a must-have for warmer temperatures. “ – Fabio Scalia Schedule your appointment with us today in Soho Schedule your appointment with us today in Brooklyn Heights Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York.
