Thinking of Going Red? How to Choose the Perfect Shade
With A-list celebrities such as Kendall Jenner and Zendaya adding red tones and tints to their hair, “going red” is shaping up to be one of the biggest hair crazes of 2022. And a big reason why this trend is booming right now is that so many different shades, hues, and intensities are possible, which makes it almost impossible to not find a shade that will suit you it ranges from a subtle strawberry blonde, to a bright cherry red, to a brown with warm undertones. If you’re inspired and are thinking about adding shades of red to your hair, or embracing and highlighting natural warm tones.
Mirko Vergani, a colorist at Fabio Scalia Salons’ Soho location, sees red hair as “the ultimate luxury accessory.” He notes that clients with natural dark hair look great with dark shades of red — burgundy, dark burgundy, wine red, dark cherry, or reddish brown colors such as auburn. With all these options to choose from after deciding to hop on the trend, what’s the catch?
According to Giulia Farella, master colorist at the Brooklyn Heights location, the hardest color to maintain is, without a doubt, red or copper since these colors tend to fade very quickly. This is great for a client that wants a temporary change, but if you fall in love with being a redhead and are going copper, you may have to make more trips to the salon for touch-ups. For example, if a brunette client is used to coming into the salon every 4-5 weeks for a single process root touch-up, a client who has red or copper hair—in order to maintain a vibrant shade of red—needs to come every 2-3 weeks to do a tint refresher. This would be a gloss treatment that adds pigment and shine to the hair without any breakage or damage.
Don’t let this stop you from living your redhead dream, though! We have the tools and tips to prevent your hair from fading too quickly. Products formulated for colored hair help slow down the fading process when washing your hair in the shower, such as Kerastase’s Bain Absolu Respect shampoo and Fondant Cica Chroma conditioner. These are both great additions to your hair cleansing routine, and will keep your hair color fresh and clean.
