Emma Stone via Getty Images We see it on celebrities, red carpet looks and magazine covers – beautiful red hair never seems to go out of style. But in the world of hair color, achieving an amazing red tone can be easier said than done. Therefore, we’ve taken this week’s blog post to discuss how to achieve the hair of your dreams. Rocking a red hair look can be hard but we believe that most people (at least with professional help) can pull it off. At Fabio Scalia Salons our philosophy is simple: if you feel good with your hair, you will look good in it. Luckily, there are different tones, or hues as we call them, that allow almost everyone to look good in red hair. It’s all about finding the right tone for you. For instance, if you naturally have a super dark base, you can add some red tones to get more dimension. If a client comes in and wants red hair, we would start with a consultation to decide whether her natural tones could work with it. After that, we decide how light or dark the hue would be. There are many different shades of red; violet red, copper, burgundy… the list goes on and on. One thing to take into consideration before your makeover, is that red color tends to fade quicker than, for instance, blonde. We want your hair to look good not only when you leave the salon, but all the weeks in between your appointments as well. Therefore, it’s super important to use products for colored hair. When you invest in a hair color, you should definitely make sure you have the right products for it. As the weeks pass by, your color will fade slightly and when this happens, it might be a great idea to boost your strands with a gloss or a toner to keep the color vibrant. Achieving an amazing red tone can be an art form, but as top hairdressers in New York City, we can help you get the color you’ve always dreamt of. Does your rinsing routine make a difference on your hair’s condition? Spoiler alert: it does! Truth is, rinsing your hair correctly can save your strands a lot of damage. In this week’s blog post, Fabio Scalia explains the importance of having a great routine. Fabio, why is rinsing your hair after a swim in the water so important? – Most people know that the sun is very damaging for the hair but fewer people know that chlorine and saltwater can be even worse. Saltwater and chlorine work as dehydrating agents and in combination with the sun, it can cause some serious damage to your hair. So if you can rinse it out immediately after you take a swim, it will make a significant difference on the health of your hair. Also, your color is more likely to last longer. In what ways does it affect your hair color? – Most people are aware that when salt is on your body, it tends to tan faster. Same goes with hair and saltwater. Therefore, it’s important to rinse your strands after a dip in the ocean if you want to maintain the color, shine and health of your hair. What else can be done to maintain the hair color? – If you want your hair color to last longer, I suggest you end every shower with a cold water rinse. Besides from being a very effective wake-up call, it’s a great way to give your mane that extra boost. It’s beneficial for your scalp as it improves blood circulation and it will make your hair shinier. Any final tips or tricks? – A beach trip is a perfect opportunity to apply product to the hair to give it that extra boost it needs during summer. So ideally, you would rinse your hair after a swim, apply deep conditioning product and let it sit throughout the day for best possible results. Jennifer Aniston by Alexei Hay for Elle Magazine It used to be that when you reached a certain age you were destined for your mother's haircut. But is there such thing as an age appropriate haircut? In this week’s blog post, Fabio Scalia explains if the relation between the length of your hair and your age in number should matter. “I’m not a believer that women should shorten their hair to correspond with the number of birthdays they’ve celebrated. Your age shouldn’t be associated with the length of your hair. It’s more about your look and how you carry it. Sure, when you see a 50+ woman with hair down to her waist, all you see is probably very long hair. But it would also be very long on a young teenage girl. Instead of thinking whether your haircut is age appropriate or not, you should instead think if it’s look appropriate. Does your haircut go well with your facial features? With your personal style? With your career? There’s where I’d put my focus. A haircut is, however, a way to play with trends and a great style can make you feel up to date and current. As your hair ages, the texture, color and quality may change and those factors should be taken into consideration when cutting and coloring your hair. You can wear a beautiful dress, but if you feel uncomfortable with it, you will look ridiculous. Same goes with hair. That’s why my final suggestion is to consult with your stylist to come up with a style that will make you look and feel like the best version of yourself! Is your haircut appropriate for your look? Image Source: Cosmopolitan / James White Even if you’ve loved your long locks for decades, spotting a pixie cut can inspire you to do a major chop. However, there are a few things to take into consideration before your makeover. In this week’s blog post, we talk about the things you need to know before your appointment. “I recommend all my clients to think long and hard before they decide whether to cut their hair short or not. But also remember that change can be good and it’s just hair – it will grow back (or you can cheat with extensions wink wink). It is important to remember that shorter hair can be harder to style. But there’s also freedom with having less hair to deal with on a daily basis. As top hairdressers in New York City, we make sure you leave our chairs with confidence and the knowledge of how to style your new ’do. My philosophy is that anyone can have short hair – you just need to find a balance with the rest of your look. Your hairstyle needs to go well with your entire look including style, facial features, texture of hair and lifestyle. As curators of hair, we are committed to perfecting the way women wash, style, wear and live with their hair and a shorter hairstyle most definitely needs a little more maintenance than a longer one. Therefore, it’s extra important that the right products are being used to get best possible results. A lot of people think that short hair is just for a small number of people. I would say it’s the opposite. There are so many varieties and shapes of short hair - it’s all about finding the right look for you! By playing with color, you can enhance the shape of your cut. For instance, if you want more volume, you play with the contrast between light and dark colors.” – Fabio Scalia Is it time for a chop? We’re welcoming the warmer season with open arms. But let’s be honest; Our hair couldn’t be less excited about the arrival of warmer temperatures. In this week’s blog post, Fabio Scalia covers the two hair products that are sure to become your summer saviors this year. “The first product I’d recommend all my clients to invest in for summer is the Leave-In Conditioner from label.m. It’s an aloe vera based product that smoothes and strengthens all hair types. It helps fighting frizz and hydrates the strands at the same time (in summer times hydration is key for a healthy mane.) You apply a small amount to freshly shampooed hair, and massage it towards the ends for added control. Comb through and style as desired. This is also a great product to bring to the beach as you can apply it right after a swim. Another summer savior is the Mystify Restyling Spray from Oribe which prolongs your style while protecting your strands at the same time. This hydrating spray reactivates yesterday’s products to restyle while nourishing, strengthening and shielding against thermal damage. It’s a great product to have in your purse to give your style a boost. It also works as a heat protector which makes it a must-have for warmer temperatures. “ – Fabio Scalia Schedule your appointment with us today in Soho Schedule your appointment with us today in Brooklyn Heights Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York. Photograph by Tāne Coffin for Byrdie.com We see them on the runways, streets and beaches – the scarf has never felt more right in time. Thanks to this fashionable trend, your low bun, classic ponytail or any other hairstyle will come out even prettier. In other words, it’s the perfect addition to complete your look this summer. “The hair scarf trend has been adapted by a lot of designers, including Chanel, Marc Jacobs and Fendi. As hairdressers in New York City, staying up to date with trends is our top priority. The scarf can not only be used as an accessory, but also as a tool to help women vary their hairstyles. For instance, if you want to move hair away from the face, you can use it as a headband. Another way to use it could be to camouflage outgrowth if you haven’t done your color in a while.” – Fabio Scalia Besides being a stylish accessory, the scarf also has many benefits on the hair’s health. It protects it from humidity, getting dehydrated, and also from UV radiation. As top hairdressers in New York City, we want your hair to look fabulous not only when you leave the salon, but also in between your appointments. Most people think that achieving a great scarf updo is hard and time consuming. Guess what? It doesn't have to be like that at all. Style by Giuseppe Bicceri for Fabio Scalia Salon The guest list has been secured, dress chosen and venue picked out. With wedding season waiting around the corner, you probably still have many decisions to make before the big day. At Fabio Scalia Salon, we want to help you decide on the final crowning detail of your look – yes, we’re talking about the hairstyle. From chignons to loose curls – brides have endless styling opportunities for the big day and picking only one can be hard. Therefore, we want to help you to be loyal to yourself and find your perfect match. “A wedding is such a big moment and a day many women have been dreaming about since they were little girls. It doesn't matter how many gowns, updos or make-up looks you’ve seen in the past – a wedding is highly personal and so should the look of the bride be. It’s important to always have the entire look in mind. I like to think about the bride as 100%, so if the dress is already 80%, you would have to go for a more simple hairdo to create a balance. “ – Giuseppe Bicceri We’re happy to introduce the series “A Dose of I Do” – a tool for all the brides-to-be to get inspired by and learn from. As hairdressers, we have to make sure that the bride looks good from the first look to the cake picture, and the 15 hours in between. Morning after morning they transform our frizzy, wet strands into glamourous manes. In previous blog posts we’ve talked about the importance of using the right products for your hair but let’s not forget about the blow dryers. This week we discuss the importance of investing in a really good one. Fabio, why is using a good blow dryer important? –If you don’t have a good blow dryer, you can’t expect to have a good result. If you want a professional result you need a professional tool – simple as that. A good blow dryer should have the right power, speed and heat control. What could be the effect of using one of low quality? – The wrong type of blow dryer in combination with poor technique can be extremely damaging to your hair. If the blow dryer is too hot, it can cause severe damage to your hair and also make your color fade faster. On the other hand, if it’s not hot enough or too slow, you won’t get the smooth result you wish for. Remember to always hold the dryer at least one inch away from the hair on the brush. That will not only give you the smoothest hair, but also make your blowout last longer. In addition, (and most importantly) it will cause less damage to the strands. Also, if you don’t have a nozzle, it’s going to be really hard to get a smooth and professional result. How important is the heat? – The heat of the blow dryer is very important and should be adapted to your specific hair type. If you have full and curly hair, you want to remove water with heat and fast speed. But if your hair is finer it’s good to slow down the process, with a lower heat, so you have enough time to build up the volume and get the results you wish for. Your blow dryer should also have a button for cold air. When blow drying hair, the warm air shapes the look and the cold hair seals it. Invest in a good blow dryer for the long haul. A cheap one will not only be a waste of money but will also cause unnecessary damage to your hair, and we definitely wouldn’t want that to happen! Miranda Kerr for Red Magazine As spring is approaching, there are plenty of reasons to update your look. The shift in seasons pretty much always brings with it a new hair color trend and as one of the best hair salons in New York City, staying up to date with the latest trends, techniques and color is our top priority. So we decided to ask our colorists Giulia Farella and Patrick Prinzo the question we all want the answer to: Which is the best hair color for a trendy spring look? “Spring is all about embracing the natural look and it should for sure be one that is easy to maintain. Therefore, face-framing highlights are a great option. They’re quick, they refresh the color and give it new life all in one session. Generally speaking, at springtime blondes wants to go blonder, while brunettes and redheads tend to stay the same as the sun will lighten up the strands anyways. I always recommend my clients to invest in a good hair treatment to keep the hair healthy and shiny through warmer seasons.” – Patrick Prinzo, Colorist Soho “After a long winter, clients tend to go brighter and funkier with their hair color. In other words, people want a fresh and new look. If my client isn’t quite ready to part with his or her winter hues, I would suggest adding a few highlights to slightly brighten up the look and create more dimension. As a colorist, I always have the final result in mind and a color that may look great on one client, might not fit another one. Trends come and go, but a great style could last forever. My advice would be to consult with your colorist to find a color that fits your skin tone, haircut and style in general.” – Giulia Farella, Colorist Brooklyn Heights Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York.
