Is your hair turning gray? You can help with the transition in numerous subtle ways. It can be an exciting adventure to experiment with many procedures to see what is best suited to your personality and appearance. Just imagine the freedom that is derived from knowing that you may never have to dye your hair again to be attractive! There is a medley of choices that's all the rage which can easily blend in with your natural hair color. We asked our colorists for their best advice and this is what they suggested: “The changeover to gray hair color could be a tough challenge, especially if your hair is long. If a client has dark hair, adding lowlights would be a good option to consider for an easier transition. You would add your base color into the gray hair, so to break the line of demarcation between regrowth and colored hair. A client who is naturally light could stop doing a base color and just do highlights to transition. The process of becoming gray is individual and cannot be the same for all. Therefore, I highly recommend all clients to come in for a consultation. As hair turns gray when we get older, the texture also changes. Embracing not only your grays, but also the new texture, will require looking for a new hairstyle and changing your choice of products”. – Lucio Galano, Color Director, Soho Here are just a few of the most trendy ideas to get you started: Highlights is a process that gradually makes the transition easy so that the changes will not stand out like a “sore thumb.” Mixed Ash Gray Highlights add many hues, like deep brown lowlights, silver, and ash gray. Morning after morning they transform our frizzy, wet strands into glamourous manes. In previous blog posts we’ve talked about the importance of using the right products for your hair but let’s not forget about the blow dryers. This week we discuss the importance of investing in a really good one. Fabio, why is using a good blow dryer important? –If you don’t have a good blow dryer, you can’t expect to have a good result. If you want a professional result you need a professional tool – simple as that. A good blow dryer should have the right power, speed and heat control. What could be the effect of using one of low quality? – The wrong type of blow dryer in combination with poor technique can be extremely damaging to your hair. If the blow dryer is too hot, it can cause severe damage to your hair and also make your color fade faster. On the other hand, if it’s not hot enough or too slow, you won’t get the smooth result you wish for. Remember to always hold the dryer at least one inch away from the hair on the brush. That will not only give you the smoothest hair, but also make your blowout last longer. In addition, (and most importantly) it will cause less damage to the strands. Also, if you don’t have a nozzle, it’s going to be really hard to get a smooth and professional result. How important is the heat? – The heat of the blow dryer is very important and should be adapted to your specific hair type. If you have full and curly hair, you want to remove water with heat and fast speed. But if your hair is finer it’s good to slow down the process, with a lower heat, so you have enough time to build up the volume and get the results you wish for. Your blow dryer should also have a button for cold air. When blow drying hair, the warm air shapes the look and the cold hair seals it. Invest in a good blow dryer for the long haul. A cheap one will not only be a waste of money but will also cause unnecessary damage to your hair, and we definitely wouldn’t want that to happen! Miranda Kerr for Red Magazine As spring is approaching, there are plenty of reasons to update your look. The shift in seasons pretty much always brings with it a new hair color trend and as one of the best hair salons in New York City, staying up to date with the latest trends, techniques and color is our top priority. So we decided to ask our colorists Giulia Farella and Patrick Prinzo the question we all want the answer to: Which is the best hair color for a trendy spring look? “Spring is all about embracing the natural look and it should for sure be one that is easy to maintain. Therefore, face-framing highlights are a great option. They’re quick, they refresh the color and give it new life all in one session. Generally speaking, at springtime blondes wants to go blonder, while brunettes and redheads tend to stay the same as the sun will lighten up the strands anyways. I always recommend my clients to invest in a good hair treatment to keep the hair healthy and shiny through warmer seasons.” – Patrick Prinzo, Colorist Soho “After a long winter, clients tend to go brighter and funkier with their hair color. In other words, people want a fresh and new look. If my client isn’t quite ready to part with his or her winter hues, I would suggest adding a few highlights to slightly brighten up the look and create more dimension. As a colorist, I always have the final result in mind and a color that may look great on one client, might not fit another one. Trends come and go, but a great style could last forever. My advice would be to consult with your colorist to find a color that fits your skin tone, haircut and style in general.” – Giulia Farella, Colorist Brooklyn Heights Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York. Sofia Vergara for Cosmopolitan Dry, frizzy and dull hair? Then you might need to boost your strands with an in-salon treatment. In previous blog posts, we’ve talked about the importance of using the right products for your specific hair type and the difference it can make on your scalp and hair. But fewer people know the benefits of investing in an in-salon treatment every now and then. Today, treatments are often confused with hair masks or conditioners. The difference is that hair masks and conditioners can be done at home, while treatments need to be applied by a professional in a salon. While conditioners and masks act on the surface of the hair and provide temporary protection and strength to it, treatments help to restore and maintain strength from within. Treatments use concentrated formulas that can target the hair, the scalp or both. They require a specific application, products and sometimes also tools. For instance, our Milbon treatment requires a specific technique where the hairdresser has to massage the strands with his or her hands in order for the product to penetrate the hair. It is common that a treatment comes in different steps that play off from each other, such as the Olaplex treatment that has 3 steps. Your hairdresser will know which type of treatment you need to step out of the salon looking and feeling like a celebrity. "People have come up to me on the street and literally asked to touch my hair!" – Vicky, Fabio Scalia Salon Client For us, it’s important to always stay up to date with the latest trends, techniques and technologies. We are proud to offer top treatments in our salons from labels such as Milbon, Oribe, Label.m and Olaplex. Ideally, we recommend our customers to do a treatment every month and a hair mask once a week at home. An in-salon treatment can give you that boost you need to keep your color, cut and strands fresh for as long as possible. Schedule your treatment with us today here (Soho) or here (Brooklyn)
