Leveraging Hair Masks to Keep Hair Lustrous and Silky Amid NYC’s Fluctuating Weather Humidity in the Summer, dry, crisp air in the winter, and precipitation year round; NYC can be both multifaceted and unpredictable when it comes to weather, and our hair is likely to suffer the consequences. If you are noticing excessive dryness, frizziness, or brittle hair due to changes in the weather, you should consider using hair masks to rehydrate your locks. Renowned salon artist Fabio Scalia is all too familiar with how the weather in NYC can create problems for his clients hair. That is why Fabio solely uses high-end and aromatic products such as Kératase Paris at his upscale salons in SoHo and Brooklyn. Fabio is dedicated to his clients and prides himself on his ability to transform damaged hair into irresistibly soft and hydrated locks, so they leave the salon feeling rejuvenated and exceptionally confident. But what is a hair mask, and why else might you want to try using one? What is a Hair Mask? Hair masks are essentially a super conditioner that you let marinate in your hair anywhere from 5 minutes to overnight. The primary goal of these is to boost the condition of your hair, through alimentary nutrients so it can strengthen and shine while simultaneously feeling smooth to the touch. Generally, hair masks consist of a mixture of butters or oils (and water) that provide intense hydration, conditioning ingredients, hair strengtheners, and various ingredients that make hair silky soft. Each hair mask has its own instructions and application processes. Some require your hair to be wet, others suggest applying while your hair is dry. Where you apply also depends on which mask you use, as some deep conditioning treatments are scalp and root specific whereas others are focused on hydrating your ends. Always read labels and ingredients prior to application. Who Should Use One? While the best candidates for hair masks are those with dry, coarse, curly, over-processed, color-treated, or hair damaged from heat styling, there are countless other reasons you might want to use one of these. Environmental factors and just living daily life can contribute to hair damage. UV rays from the sun can cause dullness and breakage, as well as scalp dryness. Cooling or heating devices can be a culprit for damaged hair–including but not limited to air conditioners, hair dryers, straighteners, and curlers. And of course being submerged in water provides its own challenges for hair care; Chlorine from a pool can strip your hair of its natural protective oils, the ocean can be extremely drying, and water in general can suck moisture from your scalp, causing dryness from your roots. But it doesn’t stop there–there are a variety of other factors that contribute to dry, brittle hair and fragile hair. Using low quality products can make or break your hair (literally), drastic temperatures such as scalding hot water can be damaging as it leaves hair cuticles exposed to the elements and more susceptible to damage. Simple things such as brushing hair while it’s wet, wearing rough fabrics, or using hair tools like tight rubber bands can cause breakage and dryness. Matter of fact is, pretty much anyone can and should use a hair mask. Weather aside, just going about living our daily lives can be a burden on our hair. It is crucial to make small shifts in our daily habits so that we can limit the damage. One small shift would be to incorporate hair masks more often. Benefits of Using a Hair Mask Nourish and Moisturize Hair masks give your hair a new breath of life. You’ll notice a dramatic difference in the shine of your hair, leaving Fabio’s salon feeling and looking positively radiant. Moisturizing products will allow your hair to retain more moisture throughout the day, acting as a protectant against environmental extremities and other potentially damaging factors such as those listed above. Reduce Breakage and Overall Damage Hair masks are a tried and true way to strengthen your hair. The effects of a hair mask will be noticeable both in appearance and in durability. If you are blasting your hair dryer or using other heat products, you need a protectant like the Kératase Severely Dry Hair Set to keep from damaging your hair. Heal Your Scalp A hydrated scalp means less dandruff, itchiness, and overall dryness. Hair masks will reinvigorate your roots and encourage hair growth. Maintain Shine and Luxurious Glow Use a hair mask once and you will see how it can energize your hair, creating a shiny and decadent glow to liven up your locks. Eliminate Frizz Hair masks help combat frizz–especially in places like NYC–by creating a barrier that seals in essential hydration whilst keeping out moisture from the environment. Reduce Tangles Hair masks help soften your hair and make it much easier to comb through. Say goodbye to tangles! Frequency of Use Hair masks aren’t a one and done deal. It is important to integrate these into your weekly or biweekly haircare routine to ensure your locks stay moisturized and protected. If you have fine or lightly textured hair, you should implement hair masks once a week. If you have more natural texture, try utilizing hair masks twice a week. If you have severely damaged hair due to coloring, product damage, sun damage, etc., consider using hair masks more frequently, even up to three times a week. A trend currently being noticed is that blondes are covering their summer highlights. They are yearning for darker roots in the cold fall and winter weather. One model changed from blonde balayage back to darker roots. Many women are simply seeking a change that will accommodate the emotional feeling that sometimes accompany the passing of summer. Darker hair can accentuate your eyes, and may also spark a sense of new pleasure as you embark upon a new season. A gradual, subtle change in color can be addressed Be aware that a sudden, drastic change may not be what you have in mind. Initially, a subtle difference in color would be your best choice, until the desired application is achieved. The colorists at Fabio Scalia Salons in New York specialize in providing the color that is tailored to your liking and will guide you in that direction. So, scheduling a consultation for changing hair to darker roots for colder weather is a vital step that you might want to take. Darker hair seems to be in demand for colder weather Many colorists have observed that their clients are turning away from summer highlights, and changing their hair to darker roots for the colder weather. One reason might be that by the end of the summer season your hair may be bleached out and no longer compliment your complexion. Instead of radiating light (like when on a beach or walking in a park), lighter strands of hair seem to consume light, whereas dark hair tends to bring out luster, glow, and volume in the fall and winter seasons. You'd want to book your appointment now at the following addresses to successfully transition from your summer highlights to darker roots for colder weather: SoHo 311 West Broadway New York, NY 10013 (646) 904-5692 Brooklyn Heights 148 Montague Street Brooklyn, NY 11201 (718) 305-4743
Tips to keep hair healthy during cooler months During the colder months of the year, our hair can tend to suffer a bit. Hair thrives when it has a proper protein/moisture balance and the cold winter weather can throw off that balance and tip the scales, resulting in drier hair that is more prone to breakage. There are a few quick and easy changes we can implement into our routine that can really benefit to keep our hair healthy and help it adjust during the seasonal transition. Keep reading for some tips and tricks that we can incorporate to keep those locks flourishing all winter long! What is hair made of? Hair is a protein that our bodies create, surprisingly, for the unusual purpose of protection. Our bodies have evolved to produce hair as a barrier to assist in combating daily stressors that otherwise would be in direct contact with our skin, nostrils and eyes. Amazingly, the hair on our head innately grows longer than anywhere else on our bodies and this is the hair that most of us are the most concerned with. Today, this hair we use for expression and styling is made up of dead skin cells so keeping it well nourished is essential for maintaining its optimal wellbeing. How cold weather wrecks our hair There are multiple reasons that the cold weather can be our hair’s worst enemy. Leaving the house with wet hair allows hair follicles to shrink and dry hair out in cooler temperatures Scalp issues such as dandruff or flaking Rough fabrics on sweaters and jackets that rub against hair and cause damage Hotter temperatures inside that create less humidity Ways to combat poor hair health in winter · Protein/Moisture balance Balanced protein and moisture levels are essential for the health and wellness of our hair. If our hair has too much protein, it becomes brittle and breaks easily upon handling. If our hair has too much moisture, it becomes gummy and stretches which causes limp hair. The sweet spot is right in the middle. A good rule of thumb is to do a regular protein treatment to ensure the protein level remains sufficient, and conditioning regularly to even out that protein that has been deposited. If your hair ever tips too far in one direction, you can implement the appropriate component to get your strands back on track. · Use moisturizing hair products Using moisturizing products assist our hair in retaining moisture throughout the day. The ingredients in our hair products are important as they determine the effectiveness of the product. The first 3 ingredients are what the product is mostly made up of. The first ingredient of a moisturizing hair product should be water or contain a substance that is heavily water based. By having water being the basis of the product, you can ensure that the product will actually moisturize the hair and not just sit on top. A pro tip: Warm your products before application for better penetration and add a light oil afterwards to seal in all that moisture! · Deep condition with steam Deep conditioning our hair is crucial, especially as temperatures start to drop. Traditional deep conditioning methods involve leaving the product in for extended amounts of time or intensifying it with heat. Adding steam instead of heat levels up moisture levels like no other. The steam more efficiently opens up the hair follicles and allows the products to penetrate more deeply than with dry heat or time alone. The best (and most inexpensive) way to steam your hair is to apply your conditioner as soon as you get in the shower and allow the steam from the hot water to do its job. If you would like to take this up a notch, you can purchase a hair steamer to sit under. Trust me, you wont regret it! · Use satin lined hoods and scarves Most of the clothing items that keep us warm and cozy in the winter are the worst for our hair. The reason is because the warmer materials like cotton and polyester that trap in heat, are rough and very harsh on our delicate strands. In the colder months when we are constantly bundled up, our hair can tend to repeatedly rub against these harsh materials all day long. This constant friction causes breakage and contributes to drier than normal hair. A way to combat this is to purchase satin lined hoods and scarves. The material is slick and gentle on our hair so we don’t have to worry about the friction causing breakage. Win win! Final thoughts Just because the weather is changing, it doesn’t mean that our hair has to suffer. We can easily enjoy mother nature’s gift and keep a head of healthy hair on our heads. Winter is actually an amazing time to establish a solid hair care regimen that we can sustain year round. Incorporating even one of these tips will make a massive impact on our hair after summer. When all else fails, remember that a trained hairstylist, like at one of our Salons, can always assist you in getting back on track. Happy hairing!

Quality Hair Products When it comes to summer hair, quality hair products are so important. The sun can effect you hair color and sometimes summer activities create a challenge for your otherwise healthy locks. If you shop a few effective hair products, you might find that it could be worth it to invest in your summer hair care. The best summer hair care products might contain a sunscreen to protect your hair from the sun. Other hair care products might have extra moisturizers so as to keep your locks healthy, no matter the potential for damage. Investing in quality hair products is so important for your hair care routine. Your attention to higher end hair products will leave you feeling confident about your purchase. Make sure to do a little research and ask your stylist before you buy so as to make smart investments to protect your hair. Rinse Your Hair After the Pool After a sunning at the pool, your hair might have collected debris from the pool at the root of the hair follicle. Small bugs, leaves or insects are always present in water. Even the cleanest pools have microscopic particles that get into your hair when you swim. It might be a good idea to run a moisturizing conditioner to help protect your hair before you go out into the sun. Before you get into the pool, you could use the opportunity for a deep conditioning treatment. Simply coat your strands with any moisturizer, oil or deep conditioning treatment and gather your hair into a swim cap. With the heat from the sun, the product will warm and your hair will benefit from your time in the sun as opposed to being subject to damage. When you rinse your hair after the pool, you will notice that your hair strands are especially soft and extra conditioned. Another idea for hair care at the pool is to rinse the chlorine out as soon as possible. Leaving pool chemicals in your hair without rinsing them can cause dryness and damage while you are under the sun. Once you are done swimming, remember to take time to rinse your hair with water. A water hose is often available in a backyard pool gathering. Alternatively, you might simply ask your host of you can rinse out in the bathtub. While it may be a little uncomfortable to ask such a thing as a guest, your hair will be better in the long run. Taking Care of Your Hair Summer hair care is a great investment. If you don't want to take the entire bottle of product with you, you might remember to bring a little bit of leave-in conditioner in a travel size bottle. Making sure to remember quality hair care when you pack for your pool party time is so very important. The next time you think about a pool party, remember to include mindful hair care as part of your get ready routine!
When it comes to the ideal head of hair, it's a perpetual journey to strike the right balance. Many people either struggle with overproducing or under-producing oil. One causes greasy, heavy hair, the other leads to dry, brittle hair. You buy a product for one problem, only to eventually welcome another problem in most cases. Other factors such as nutrition, toxic products, blood flow, chemicals in shower water, and overall toxicity play large roles as well. It's a combination of factors that cause a lack of adequate nourishment. Dry, brittle hair can be a stubborn condition to remedy. It requires a combination of good internal nutrition, scalp massages, and truly hydrating, nourishing oils. Many oils don't have the right combination of nutrients to really get the job done. Some leave the hair overly greasy, heavy, and worse than before. Here are several natural products that may help nourish hair that is dull, dehydrated, weak, and in desperate need of nourishment. Baobab Seed Oil Baobab oil is a deeply hydrating oil that comes from the famous baobab tree in Africa. It is a strong, resilient, highly revered tree in because of the nutrition it provides, even during droughts. The oil is pressed from the seeds, which contain omega fatty acids, vitamin E, D, A, and more. The compounds help to nourish the scalp, heal skin cells, and hydrate hair. Moreover, baobab oil nourishes and hydrates without weighing hair down or causing greasiness. Watermelon Seed Oil Just like watermelons are known to be one of the most hydrating fruits, the same goes for the seed oils. The oils extracted from watermelon seeds are great at hydrating and balancing dry, brittle hair. The fatty acids and plant sterols help to calm down inflammation, fight hormonal hair loss, and guard against dehydration. Furthermore, they help add texture and shine without any greasy residue. In addition, watermelon seed oil may also help to balance sebum production. Meadowfoam Seed Oil Meadowfoam has unique fatty acids that help to hydrate and strengthen dry, brittle hair. The eicosenoic long-chain fatty acids have the ability to improve shine, texture, and texture over time. They are highly resistant to heat and oxidation, which can help protect hair from the humidity and the elements. Moreover, meadowfoam oil coats the hair and locks in hydration without causing greasiness. Emu & Ostrich Oil These two oils are rich in nourishing and repairing fats that help to soothe dryness. The molecular profile allows them to be easily incorporated into the skin's structure, causing lasting hydration. Some have said that emu oil may stimulate dormant hair follicles. Although it is unlikely to cause the regrowth of hair, some people have noticed thicker, fuller hair. The word on the street is that ostrich oil may be superior to emu because of its smaller molecular size, which improves penetration. In addition, it may be slighter richer in the nourishing fats and nutrients that cause the positive effects. Fenugreek & Marshmallow Root Fenugreek and marshmallow root are both excellent herbs to provide nutrients and moisture to dry, brittle hair. The lecithin and other nutrients in fenugreek help nurture hair that's been deprived for years. Marshmallow root, being a mucilaginous herb, provides much needed nutrition and hydration. Combining some of the oils mentioned above with these two herbs as a hair mask may greatly benefit those suffering with dry, brittle hair. Being consistent is very important when it comes to restoring hair. Although some people may see results quickly, most situations may require more patience. Nourishing the body internally and doing scalp massages is also very helpful. That way, the nutrition you saturate your body with can effectively reach the hair follicles. Supplementing with certain nutrients such as rice ceramides, collagen, bamboo extract, biotin, and others may be very helpful in restoring dry, brittle hair over time.
Scalp Treatments, What is the difference? When it comes to proper hair care, a weekly deep cleansing routine is a very good habit. Dry shampoos, conditioners, hair serums and a multitude of styling products can cause a build up of residue at the hair root. A thoughtful hair care routine is the best way to maintain a healthy head of hair growth. If you invest in a few quality pre-shampoo cleanses throughout the month, the hair follicles at the base of your hair strands collect less residue over time and support stronger lengths. Just like the pores on your face, hair follicles at the root often collect whatever your daily cleanse and style leaves behind. Different from a regular shampoo, scalp treatments are often sold in the form of a scrub or mask. Like a facial exfoliant, a pre-shampoo scalp treatment will unclog the hair follicles so as to clear any oils or residue from hair products. When your scalp is clean, your hair should grow and look most healthy. Often, the hair is washed without regard to scrubbing the scalp. While most of your hair follicles support clean hair strands, the root of the hair at the scalp most likely holds microscopic debris. If you'll focus your attention on scrubbing your scalp with a pre-shampoo scalp exfoliant, your head will benefit from a deep clean to unclog those hair follicles. A deep cleaning scalp treatment will help stimulate blood flow and support optimum hair health. Milbon Scalp For scalps with itchiness, dandruff, dryness, oiliness or odor, we recommend Milbon Scalp. To help get down into the first layers of hair follicles on your head, you'll softly rub the product into your scalp in a circular motion. This line offers a Purifying Gel Shampoo, Hydrating Treatment and Soothing Scalp Moisturizer. The entire line of Milbon products focuses on the science behind a healthy scalp. The best thing about this collection is that it deposits healthy oils and essential moisturizing nutrients to your scalp after scrubbing your deepest roots clean. Kerastase Scrub Again, scalp treatments unclog the hair follicles, differentiating these products from a daily shampoo. Pre-shampoo cleanses in the Keretese hair scrub line of best-selling scrubs are scalp-specific. While they provide a large array of hair conditioning cleaning treatments, the products that have been created to get rid of excess sebum and dead skin cells are available in the list of hair scrub products. To help support hair health, we recommend trying out a set that is grouped together so that you can choose the right system for your oily or sensitive scalp. This line is unique in that it combines ingredients to treat dull, lifeless hair. Whichever product that you choose, remember that a deep cleaning scrub is best when practiced once a week. Regular shampoo has sulfates that create soap suds so as to deliver fragrance and condition the length of your hair. The biggest difference in a scrub is that it is slightly gritty and it treats the scalp. For a professional treatment, book an appointment at one of our salons.
Thick, shiny, silky hair is a goal that millions of people diligently chase after year after year in order to achieve. Sometimes spending thousands of dollars in the process. Beautiful hair has been looked upon with great appreciation and reverence for thousands of years. External products are certainly helpful in achieving this elusive goal, but oftentimes the internal products are sorely overlooked. There are many powerful, affordable nutrients for healthier hair that can get you closer to your ideal head of hair. One of the best perks about using supplements for hair health is that many of these nutrients help your internal health as well. The byproduct of what these nutrients do internally reflects externally as healthier, stronger, more robust hair. These compounds may not stop genetic hair loss, but they can help those that are experienced weaker, thinner, dull hair for other reasons. Here are four nutrients that may help take your hair to the next level. 1. Chlorella Growth Factor Chlorella Growth Factor, or CGF, is an incredibly interesting and powerful compound that comes from chlorella algae. Most chlorella extracts don't contain very high levels, but certain specific products are concentrated to contain this unique fraction. Chlorella growth factor is the incredibly powerful, nutrient dense portion that is found within the nucleus of the cell. As the name insinuates, chlorella growth factor has an incredible rate of reproduction, or growth. This is because of the raw power and nutrients contained within the nucleus. Chlorella growth factor has been seen in research to cause many beneficial effects in the body. Some of them include protecting cells from toxins, repairing damage to the DNA and cells, expedited wound healing, improved mental and physical development for children, a stronger immune response, improved protein synthesis, and much more. The vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and nucleic acids are potent nutrients for healthier hair. These internal effects reflect outwardly by speeding up hair growth and improving the overall strength of it. 2. Fulvic and Humic Acid Fulvic and humic acid is another incredibly intriguing substance that may help promote a healthier head of hair. They really work together as one, although categorized as fulvic and humic acids. It is a highly complex substance that contains many different vitamins, minerals, fats, electrolytes, nucleic acids, antioxidants, flavonoids, and other powerful nutrients for healthier hair. Studies on fulvic and humic acid suggest that it may help to promote protein synthesis, cellular oxygenation, removal of waste products, energy production, and healing within the body. All of this may lead to thicker and stronger hair, as well as faster hair growth. Not everyone may experience these effects, but many have noticed tangible improvements over time. 3. Bamboo Leaf Extract Bamboo leaf has the highest known content of organic silica in the world. Silica is found in many products such as horsetail, nettle leaf, and other extracts. Silica is extremely important and fundamental to life, behind only oxygen as the most abundant element on earth. It is also beneficial inside the human body in certain forms. Not all forms of silica are safe for ingestion, but organic silica found in bamboo leaf has an array of benefits. It is one of the most powerful nutrients for healthier hair. Deficiencies of silica have been tied to weak hair, brittle nails, calcium deposits in soft tissues, weakened joints, and loss of vitality in the skin. Supplementing with a good silica supplement can improve hair strength, thickness, and speed up growth. 4. Sea Buckthorn Oil Sea buckthorn products have grown in popularity over the last 10 years and become well-known as a beauty enhancing supplement. It is packed with different healthy fatty acids, including omega-7's. Omega-7 fats have underrated benefits for inflammation, heart disease, and diabetes. They also help to strengthen cell membranes, which shows outwardly with improved hair and skin luster. Sea buckthorn berries also contain an array of minerals, antioxidants, sterols, vitamin C, and vitamin E. These are all highly beneficial nutrients for healthier hair. When used together, these different compounds help to nourish and hydrate from the inside out. Many people have reported shinier, healthier, stronger, and more hydrated hair after supplementing with sea buckthorn oil for several months. Some have also reported faster hair growth. Using internal supplements along with high quality external ones gives you the best of both worlds to help achieve the most beautiful head of hair possible.
