With colder temperatures approaching, it’s time to pull out your winter coats, cuddle up with pup on a cold night and prepare for the holidays. Colder weather is synonymous with drying of the skin on the face and body. But many forget that your hair and scalp can also suffer from freezing temperatures. According to the Oxford Online Pharmacy, dehydration from the cold weather and excessive indoor heat can cause brittle hair and a dry scalp, leading to long term damage. Additionally, wearing hats can place stress on hair strands. Thankfully, at Fabio Scalia Salon, your hair salon in Brooklyn Heights and Soho, we have three simple solutions to prevent negative side effects of cold temperatures on your hair. These easy steps can protect the hair and scalp, as well as provide vital nourishment right down to the root.    USE A HIGH-QUALITY HAIR MASQUE  Hair masque (mask) serve as one of the main defenses in combating breakage and split ends caused by cold temperatures. Their purpose is multifaceted, proven to protect and soften both the hair and scalp. At Fabio Scalia Salon, we offer both in-salon and at-home hair masque treatments that revitalize damaged hair and soften the scalp. Some of our hairstylists’ favorite masques (and ones we use on ourselves and clients every day) are from the Kérastase line, available at Fabio Scalia Salon. Kérastase offers a plethora of masques designed for a variety of hair types. The Masquintense Fine Hair Mask works wonders on those with finer hair, while the Masque Magistral is perfectly formulated for those with severely damaged hair. Notably, the Kerastase brand is a leader in providing the highest quality products with the most natural ingredients. The Aura Botanica line is paraben-free and 96 percent of the ingredients are all-natural. The Aura Botanica Baume Miracle (hair balm) nourishes both dry hair, as well as the skin, so it’s a no brainer!   USE HAIR OIL As if the Kerastase brand wasn’t already perfect, their hair oil conditioners are literally out of this world. Le Fondant Conditioner is an ultimate elixir designed for fine to normal hair, so nearly everyone can use it! Its benefits are numerous. Infused with marula, camellia and argan oils, it keeps your hair shiny, nourished and smooth. Le Fondant Conditioner, among other products, is available at Fabio Scalia Salon. Fabio recommends using Le Fondant as a pre-conditioner before jumping in the shower. Simply apply it to wet hair and let the conditioner sit for a few minutes before rinsing. Make sure to comb and distribute the conditioner evenly, as suggested by our expert hairstylists and the Kerastase team.   USE LESS HAIRSPRAY AND MOUSSE As noted earlier, hair can become damaged by excessive cold and heat. Unfortunately, some hair sprays and hair mousses may cause additional damage during colder weather. They can dry both the hair and scalp, leading to dull looking hair and even flaky skin on the scalp, according to Stuart Phillips Holistic Hairdressing. Fabio and our other expert hairstylists recommend using less hair spray and mousses during excessive cold. Kerastase and Oribe offer a wide variety of hair sprays and mousses that protect your hair and allow you to style it perfectly. You can find a wide range of hair sprays and mousses that won’t cause damage to your hair at Fabio Scalia Salon.    Schedule your appointment with us today in Soho Schedule your appointment with us today in Brooklyn Heights Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York. Henrik Lundqvist by Tobias Lundqvist for Café  A beard can up your masculine look a lot, but not taking care of your facial hair can have the opposite effect. There are a few things every gentleman should have, and a proper grooming routine is one of them. However, it’s not always as simple as a razor and shaving cream. Therefore, we’ve taken this week’s blog post to let Giuseppe Bicceri explain the do’s and don'ts of grooming. What do you, as a hairdresser, like so much about grooming? I love how it can change a man’s look completely and create a harmony to the face in conjunction with the hair. Grooming allows me to combine my knowledge as a makeup artist and the skills of a hairdresser. It has the same effect as makeup, but it lasts for weeks instead of 10 hours. I love making people feel beautiful and confident and having a proper grooming routine definitely play its part.                                                                                                         Before & after by Giuseppe Bicceri Some people say that grooming is like contouring but for men — is that true? Yes! Facial hair can be thick, thin, short, long and even tangled but getting a proper trim can tweak a man’s features. With makeup, it’s all about light and shadow to create depth to the face. The same thing goes with grooming and beard. For instance, if a client has a fuller face, we play with sharp lines and the opposite if we want to make the face a bit wider. Oh wow! What else can be done?   You can make a face thinner, create a sharp jawline and fuller lips – it’s all about playing with volume and shadows. One way to change the shape of your mouth is to trim a fine line just above the lips to make them larger. Small adjustments like this have a great effect on the final look. How often should you ideally trim your beard? It all depends on how fast your beard grows, but usually, I create the shapes at the salon and then all you have to do is keep the shape by trimming it every two weeks. As hairdressers in New York City, we want to make sure that your hair fits in your style, life and personality. Same goes for your facial hair. Jennifer Aniston by Alexei Hay for Elle Magazine It used to be that when you reached a certain age you were destined for your mother's haircut. But is there such thing as an age appropriate haircut? In this week’s blog post, Fabio Scalia explains if the relation between the length of your hair and your age in number should matter. “I’m not a believer that women should shorten their hair to correspond with the number of birthdays they’ve celebrated. Your age shouldn’t be associated with the length of your hair. It’s more about your look and how you carry it. Sure, when you see a 50+ woman with hair down to her waist, all you see is probably very long hair. But it would also be very long on a young teenage girl. Instead of thinking whether your haircut is age appropriate or not, you should instead think if it’s look appropriate. Does your haircut go well with your facial features? With your personal style? With your career? There’s where I’d put my focus. A haircut is, however, a way to play with trends and a great style can make you feel up to date and current. As your hair ages, the texture, color and quality may change and those factors should be taken into consideration when cutting and coloring your hair. You can wear a beautiful dress, but if you feel uncomfortable with it, you will look ridiculous. Same goes with hair. That’s why my final suggestion is to consult with your stylist to come up with a style that will make you look and feel like the best version of yourself! Is your haircut appropriate for your look? Style by Luis Miller The idea of mastering perfectly loose curls can be more than intimidating. As summer is approaching, the beachy and wavy style feels just right in time. In this week’s blog post, we’ve asked our celebrity stylist, Luis Miller, how to get the perfect messy waves – no beach trip required. I would start with completely dry and clean hair so you could rock the finished look for 3-4 days. I usually go over the strands with heat protectant spray and a paddle brush to give it more shine and smoothness. Thereafter, I start sectioning the hair from the neck up, approximately  1 inch wide sections. The most important thing is not how you section the hair, it’s how much you wrap around the wand. The bigger the section you wrap around, the looser the curls will be. For this particular style, one inch of hair should be just right. When it comes to choosing the wand of the curling iron, I’d choose the size 1- 1¼ for short hair and 1 ¼ - 1 ½  for longer manes. If your hairstyles don’t tend to hold, you can spray the strands with a light hairspray before wrapping it around the curling iron. You want to alternate directions, meaning if you wrap one section back, you want to wrap the next one forward. Once you get to the front of your hair, those sections are extra important since they frame the face, and you want those to be wrapped away from it. When hair is completely curled, I spray light hairspray all over and then comb it with a wide tooth comb. I finish with a styling product like Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray or Sea Salt Spray and shake it with my fingers. To maintain the look as long as possible, I would sleep with a high bun. Also, use a soft bristle brush and dry texturizing spray when needed. – Luis Miller Schedule your appointment with us today in Soho Schedule your appointment with us today in Brooklyn Heights Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York. It’s time to get real. We put our hair through a lot: color, sun, heat styling… the list can go on and on. We might be guilty of prematurely thinning our hair without even knowing it. At Fabio Scalia Salons, we focus on the hair’s integrity and long-term growth and we want your hair to live up to its full potential. Therefore, we’ve broken down 4 easy steps to follow for thick, healthy, breathtaking hair. TAKE SUPPLEMENTS It's not just genetics that have it out for your hair. Stress, diet and environmental toxins are all factors proven to compromise the health of your hair. Caring for your strands from the inside out is just as important as what products you’re using. At Fabio Scalia Salons, we offer our clients Nutrafol, a 100% drug-free supplement to prevent hair thinning. It’s perfect for those who find it hard to cover all vitamins needed for optimal nutrition in their daily diet.  CUT DOWN ON TENSION HEAT STYLING Want beautiful hair? Of course, you do! However, before your hair can be beautiful, it has to be healthy, so try to only use hot tools occasionally. You’ll thank yourself later! Not giving your hair a break from heat can speed up the thinning process and will leave your strands fine and flat in the long run. Also, hairstyles that are too tight will pull your hair at the roots and eventually cause breakage. INVEST IN A SCALP TREATMENT Give your hair some extra TLC, and treat yourself to a scalp treatment every now and then. At our Soho and Brooklyn Heights locations, we offer our clients top treatments from brands such as Oribe, Milbon and Phyto. These treatments penetrate the strands deeply, enhance your color and leave you with not only gorgeous, but also healthy hair. HAVE A HEALTHY AND BALANCED DIET In previous blog posts, we’ve talked of the importance of having a healthy and balanced diet for your hair. Make sure to fill up your kitchen with these nutrients to grow your healthiest hair ever. Photograph by Tāne Coffin for Byrdie.com  We see them on the runways, streets and beaches – the scarf has never felt more right in time. Thanks to this fashionable trend, your low bun, classic ponytail or any other hairstyle will come out even prettier. In other words, it’s the perfect addition to complete your look this summer. “The hair scarf trend has been adapted by a lot of designers, including Chanel, Marc Jacobs and Fendi. As hairdressers in New York City, staying up to date with trends is our top priority. The scarf can not only be used as an accessory, but also as a tool to help women vary their hairstyles. For instance, if you want to move hair away from the face, you can use it as a headband. Another way to use it could be to camouflage outgrowth if you haven’t done your color in a while.” – Fabio Scalia Besides being a stylish accessory, the scarf also has many benefits on the hair’s health. It protects it from humidity, getting dehydrated, and also from UV radiation. As top hairdressers in New York City, we want your hair to look fabulous not only when you leave the salon, but also in between your appointments. Most people think that achieving a great scarf updo is hard and time consuming. Guess what? It doesn't have to be like that at all. Julianne Hough Dull skin and eyes are two side effects of picking the wrong hair color for your face. But finding your perfect match can be anything but easy. Truth is, it’s so much more than picking a trendy tone or a color that you like. It has to go well with your entire look and if it does – it will make your skin glow and your eyes stand out. In today's blog post, our colorist Giuseppe Bicceri explains the importance of picking the right color for your specific look… “It’s not only about what the client wants or what she likes, it has go well with her lifestyle. I want to ensure my clients that they will look good until their next appointment. Therefore, I usually start a consultation with the question: How often are you willing to come to fix your color? For instance, if a client is going away for a trip, I have to find a color that matches her skin tone, complexion and looks good every day until she comes in for her next visit. What usually happens in the summer is that the skin tone and lifestyle changes, so you can not do the same color for every season. A hair color is highly personal and will change for everyone. I believe that everyone can have red hair– you just have to find the perfect shade for you. As hairdressers, we customize our services to deliver personalized results and I love that about my job.” – Giuseppe Bicceri, Fabio Scalia Soho Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York. Vanessa Hudgens by Jeff Lipsky for Women's Health   Is there such thing as beauty sleep? Does your workout routine affect your strands? Can sleep deprivation cause hair loss? In this week’s blog post, Fabio reveals the healthy habits in our everyday life that have a huge impact on your hair and its health.   Rinse your hair with cold water Finishing every shower with an ice cold rinse doesn’t seem that compelling. But the benefits are great. By finishing your shower with a cold rinse, you close the pores, stimulate your blood circulation and reset the skin and scalp. Also, this will make your color last longer! Meditate on a daily basis Meditation is a natural medication proven to have relaxing effects on our bodies, and the scalp and hair are no exception. Excessive stress can lead to hair loss, dandruff and itchy and oily scalp. A daily practice of meditation can help to reset your stress levels. Make sure to get enough sleep Speaking of stress: sleep deprivation is a form of stress and by now we know that stress may have great effect on hair loss. As we are sleeping, the skin, scalp and hair regain their strength again. In other words – sleep allows all parts of our bodies to function better. Exercise on a regular basis When we exercise we also sweat. Through sweat, toxins and other waste substances get rinsed out from the skin’s pores, giving us fresh and glowy skin. Likewise, when we sweat from our scalp, it helps to unclog the hair follicles, which gives room for new hair to grow. However, excessive exercise can have the opposite effect as it’s a way of stressing your body. Control your diet In a previous blog post, we have talked about 10 nutrients that are beneficial for your hair. Your hair will benefit significantly from a balanced diet. However, if you find it difficult to cover all vitamins needed for optimal nutrition, adding Nutrafol, a 100% drug free dietary supplement, to your daily routine could make a huge difference. Get yours in the salon today! Massage your body (and scalp!) A body or foot massage increases blood circulation in our bodies. This allows the hair follicles to receive all of the oxygen, nutrients and minerals that they need to grow. When it comes to scalp massage, it’s important to be gentle. Too much or a too aggressive scalp massage stimulates the sebaceous glands and as a result, more sebum is produced. Instead, aim for gentle movements clockwise and counterclockwise – and no nails! Miranda Kerr for Red Magazine As spring is approaching, there are plenty of reasons to update your look. The shift in seasons pretty much always brings with it a new hair color trend and as one of the best hair salons in New York City, staying up to date with the latest trends, techniques and color is our top priority. So we decided to ask our colorists Giulia Farella and Patrick Prinzo the question we all want the answer to: Which is the best hair color for a trendy spring look?   “Spring is all about embracing the natural look and it should for sure be one that is easy to maintain. Therefore, face-framing highlights are a great option. They’re quick, they refresh the color and give it new life all in one session. Generally speaking, at springtime blondes wants to go blonder, while brunettes and redheads tend to stay the same as the sun will lighten up the strands anyways. I always recommend my clients to invest in a good hair treatment to keep the hair healthy and shiny through warmer seasons.”   – Patrick Prinzo, Colorist Soho “After a long winter, clients tend to go brighter and funkier with their hair color. In other words, people want a fresh and new look. If my client isn’t quite ready to part with his or her winter hues, I would suggest adding a few highlights to slightly brighten up the look and create more dimension. As a colorist, I always have the final result in mind and a color that may look great on one client, might not fit another one. Trends come and go, but a great style could last forever. My advice would be to consult with your colorist to find a color that fits your skin tone, haircut and style in general.” – Giulia Farella, Colorist Brooklyn Heights Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York. Kate Moss for ELLE Argentina It's not hard to fall into the trap. You see one picture of Jane Birkin or Selena Gomez and you immediately think: It's time — I'm getting bangs! Bangs aren’t just an accessory, they are also something that should go well with your facial features, style and personality. Therefore, we recommend all our clients to think one more time before they do the chop. How do you know if it’s time for a cut and most importantly; which type of bangs should you go for? Cutting bangs may seem like a huge commitment, but it doesn’t have to be like that. If you feel unsure, start off with longer ones to make the grow-out phase easier. You definitely want your bangs to be cutting-edge, and that’s why you need to take a few things into consideration. First of all, your facial features. The shape of your face, eyes, eyebrows, and hairline are just a few things that may affect the look of your bangs. A 60’s inspired fringe may be flattering for your face but not to someone else’s. Therefore we always recommend our clients to consult with a hairdresser before cutting it off. Another thing to keep in mind is the hair type. If you have shorter hair, the gap between the bangs and the hair won’t be as dramatic. So if you’re not happy with your style, it’s easier to blend it back in again. If you have hair on the finer or thinner side, bangs may require taking a lot of hair from the back of your head and that might affect the layering of your style. Last, but definitely not least, your bangs have to go well with your lifestyle. Having great bangs is like having a good purse. A classic Chanel looks good with every outfit, but a Bottega Veneta might not be for everyone. Cutting bangs takes a couple of minutes, but months to grow out. Even though this can be a drastic change in your looks, always remember that hair grows back. It’s not a tattoo. Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York.
