Meet Mellisa Goodwin We met with model and actress Mellisa Goodwin to talk about hair color. Hair pigment changes in the hair are very common. However, we don't speak enough about how common it is for people in their twenties to experience these changes as well. Mellisa's started to notice some hair pigment changes in her hair a few months back. Understandably, the problem became worrisome and made her very anxious. The right way to tackle the problem If you start to notice pigment changes in your hair color, do not panic! It's very common and can have many different reasons behind it. One of the most common reasons is stress, autoimmune diseases or if you are vitamin deficient. We found a great article that explains the most common reasons here! Mellisa used box color dye in order to take care of the problem. This is the wrong way to approach the problem. You always want to go to a professional hair colorist. They are experts in understanding hair pigment changes and how the hair reacts to chemicals. Consult with them before you put anything in your hair. Box color did not give Mellisa the result that she had hoped for. Instead if left her with undesirable color bends in her hair. This is where our color specialist Giulia stepped in to make sure Mellisa would get the hair color she desired. The Process Giulia's first step in the process was to start by removing the pigment from her previous box color dye. Then, she did a single process color which takes care of the base color. After, Giulia followed with a balayage technique aimed at correcting the color bends imprinted by the box color dye. The balayage technique allowed Giulia to break the bends and blend everything nicely together. Finally, Giulia added a gloss to tone it all down and give it a nice shine! Press play to check out the process and please comment below for any questions, and you are always welcome for a hair consultation if you are uncertain of your hair!   Schedule your appointment with us today Check out the video to see the process in action. With colder temperatures approaching, it’s time to pull out your winter coats, cuddle up with pup on a cold night and prepare for the holidays. Colder weather is synonymous with drying of the skin on the face and body. But many forget that your hair and scalp can also suffer from freezing temperatures. According to the Oxford Online Pharmacy, dehydration from the cold weather and excessive indoor heat can cause brittle hair and a dry scalp, leading to long term damage. Additionally, wearing hats can place stress on hair strands. Thankfully, at Fabio Scalia Salon, your hair salon in Brooklyn Heights and Soho, we have three simple solutions to prevent negative side effects of cold temperatures on your hair. These easy steps can protect the hair and scalp, as well as provide vital nourishment right down to the root.    USE A HIGH-QUALITY HAIR MASQUE  Hair masque (mask) serve as one of the main defenses in combating breakage and split ends caused by cold temperatures. Their purpose is multifaceted, proven to protect and soften both the hair and scalp. At Fabio Scalia Salon, we offer both in-salon and at-home hair masque treatments that revitalize damaged hair and soften the scalp. Some of our hairstylists’ favorite masques (and ones we use on ourselves and clients every day) are from the Kérastase line, available at Fabio Scalia Salon. Kérastase offers a plethora of masques designed for a variety of hair types. The Masquintense Fine Hair Mask works wonders on those with finer hair, while the Masque Magistral is perfectly formulated for those with severely damaged hair. Notably, the Kerastase brand is a leader in providing the highest quality products with the most natural ingredients. The Aura Botanica line is paraben-free and 96 percent of the ingredients are all-natural. The Aura Botanica Baume Miracle (hair balm) nourishes both dry hair, as well as the skin, so it’s a no brainer!   USE HAIR OIL As if the Kerastase brand wasn’t already perfect, their hair oil conditioners are literally out of this world. Le Fondant Conditioner is an ultimate elixir designed for fine to normal hair, so nearly everyone can use it! Its benefits are numerous. Infused with marula, camellia and argan oils, it keeps your hair shiny, nourished and smooth. Le Fondant Conditioner, among other products, is available at Fabio Scalia Salon. Fabio recommends using Le Fondant as a pre-conditioner before jumping in the shower. Simply apply it to wet hair and let the conditioner sit for a few minutes before rinsing. Make sure to comb and distribute the conditioner evenly, as suggested by our expert hairstylists and the Kerastase team.   USE LESS HAIRSPRAY AND MOUSSE As noted earlier, hair can become damaged by excessive cold and heat. Unfortunately, some hair sprays and hair mousses may cause additional damage during colder weather. They can dry both the hair and scalp, leading to dull looking hair and even flaky skin on the scalp, according to Stuart Phillips Holistic Hairdressing. Fabio and our other expert hairstylists recommend using less hair spray and mousses during excessive cold. Kerastase and Oribe offer a wide variety of hair sprays and mousses that protect your hair and allow you to style it perfectly. You can find a wide range of hair sprays and mousses that won’t cause damage to your hair at Fabio Scalia Salon.    Schedule your appointment with us today in Soho Schedule your appointment with us today in Brooklyn Heights Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York. With today's endless product options and techniques to choose from, it can be somewhat perplexing as to why it’s important to invest money in hair health. In order to save money in the long run and maintain beautiful, healthy hair for years to come, it’s key to invest in both the right stylist and the right products. At Fabio Scalia, we utilize proven techniques that will help bring your hair back to all its glory.  Your hair is complex Your hair is an important part of your overall image. Understanding the complex components of your hair is something an expert stylist can help you with. Everyone requires different products and styling techniques to maintain optimal health and appearance. No two individuals may be able to perform the same exact hair care routine. Drugstore brands or products with various harmful ingredients may not only be stripping the hair of vital nutrients; they can also cause long term damage by weakening the overall structure of the follicle. This causes hair growth to slow down, as well as dull hair and split ends to show up in its place. Especially during months where we experience colder temperatures. Extreme temperatures weaken the hair structure and lead to a dry, itchy scalp. It’s fundamental to use high-quality products that prevent breakage and keep your hair moisturized. Using the right products Simply using the same shampoo or conditioner as a friend or family member can actually be causing long term damage to your hair. According to the Journal for Investigative Dermatology, “Loss of luster, frizz, split ends, and other hair problems are particularly prevalent among people who repeatedly alter the natural style of their hair or among people with hair that is intrinsically weak” (Sinclair, 2007). Products like Kérastase offer a myriad of products that restore and protect your hair right down to the follicle. We offer products that are ideal for both renewing the look of your hair, as well as rebuilding its structure. Importantly, science notes that using certain hair products is fundamental to improving hair health.    Investing in the right tools In order to understand why spending a little extra cash from the start will help you save lots in the long run, it’s important to know what your hair is comprised of. Hair is made up of a protein called Keratin, also found in our nails and skin, according to L’Oreal Paris. The actual structure of the hair consists of a variety of complex structures, from the hair follicle to the blub, as well as the hair shaft, where your cells reproduce to create more hair (see this link for more info).   According to Design Essentials, various hair tools and chemical processes can damage the cuticle layer of the hair. That’s why it’s crucial to invest in both the right stylist and the best products that are ideal for your hair type. Not all products are made with the best ingredients. Your diet, stress level, and various other factors also play a major role in hair growth and appearance. Additionally, taking a daily supplement, such as Nutrafol, sold at Fabio Scalia Salon, can restore hair growth and maintain hair wellness.   "Haircare can be complicated, but it doesn’t have to be! Utilizing the right stylist, products and supplements will keep your hair healthy and its appearance voluminous and shiny. Do you have products containing any of these three ingredients on your shelves? If you do, then it’s time for a major clearance. In this week's blog post, we're here to talk about the mystery additives that might be added to your hair products, why they aren’t so great and how you can avoid them.  SULFATES The reason why you find them in a lot of hair products is that they act like detergents. They are very effective in the process of removing dirt and oil from the hair and scalp.  The problem with sulfates is that they can remove a little too much. In other words, sulfates are aggressive and “harsh” and can strip away your scalp’s natural moisture. Prolonged use of sulfates can weaken your hair cuticles which can have a huge impact on the condition of the hair and its long-term growth. PARABENS Today it's not uncommon to see “Paraben free” on lots of product labels, here's the reason why: parabens are a group of chemicals that are similar to the hormones that naturally occur in the body. Thus, added parabens are harmful because they can disrupt the natural release of these hormones. In many products, parabens act as "fillers" used to swallow the product and create more of the product itself. Thus, they don't provide any actual value to the quality of the product only the quantity of it. SILICONES A big no-no when it comes to hair products is silicones. The reason why? They do not dissolve in water which, in the short term, might give the hair extra shine, but in reality, it causes the hair to become dull and dry by blocking essential oils and moisture that penetrates from the hair’s cortex. Also causing your scalp to become way out of balance; a “wall” is built which prevents other products to penetrate the hairs’ strands while also causing unwanted build up, especially for those with curly hair.     In addition to sulfates, parabens and silicones, you want to make sure that your hair products don't contain chemicals that are either too acid or too alkaline. If they do, your hair’s pH-balance could be in disarray. For instance, if your hair has an alkaline pH-balance, the cuticles might be swollen and disappear, which could result in unnecessary swollenness of the cortex as well as damage. In addition, your color might fade quicker as your melanin levels are susceptible to damage. Ideally, your pH-balance should be between 5-5.5. At Fabio Scalia Salons we offer the best high-quality products that focus on the hair’s integrity and long-term growth. There’s no better feeling than leaving the salon with new and fresh hair extensions. At Fabio Scalia Salon in New York City, we offer Great Lengths – the most luxurious extensions on the market, made from ethically sourced, fully traceable non-chemically treated human hair. Knowing how to take care of your new strands can be confusing but no need to panic! In this week’s blog post, our stylist Luis Miller explains how to take care of your extensions properly in between salon visits. Luis, in a previous blog post we’ve touched the topic of taking care of your extensions. What is your tip for clients who just had them done? Clients who have never had extensions before tend to have this idea that the upkeep of hair extensions is very hard and tedious work, however, that is far from true. What I tell all my new clients is that the key to maintaining beautiful extensions is brushing! You have to brush your hair extensions daily, twice a day if needed. Always brush your extensions when they are dry, section by section, with movements away from the bond. Before and after by Luis Miller What about products? Should you use specific ones for the extensions? I would suggest investing in a good quality paddle brush, other than that some dry shampoo or dry spray will take you a long way. Avoid using greasy products. Got it! How often are you supposed to wash your hair with them in? Continue washing your hair as you normally would. Two or three times a week is good, just remember not to apply direct heat to the bond when you are blow drying and styling your hair. Other than that just have fun with them. Is it time to get extensions? Courtesy of Calvin Klein Whether we like it or not, we’ve reached the end of summer. It’s the time of the year when fashionistas all over the world come together to observe new trends and inspirations. Fall is like new years for the hair and fashion week is the party that sets it off. But the end of summer is also when your hair is in the worst stage of the year. No need to freak out – we’re here to help you! It’s the end of August and your hair is probably dehydrated, frizzy and in desperate need of a haircut. Your hair has most likely been exposed to extreme UV-radiation that caused damage to your strands. Especially if you’ve spent the last couple of months swimming. You see, saltwater and chlorine work as dehydrating agents and in combination with the sun, it can cause some serious damage to your hair. A lot of people think that getting blonder during summer is a blessing, but what you have to realize is that the damage from the sun can be much more intense than a highlight service. In addition to this, your pH is probably out of balance and needs to be reset. So what can you do to reset your hair and get it back to being healthy again? First of all, a salon visit is usually in order so that we can reevaluate the condition of your hair before performing any type of service. In some cases, we have to trim the hair before we can go on with color – it all depends on the current condition of your mane. However, one thing almost all clients have in common after a hot and sunny summer is that they need to hydrate the strands. We recommend doing a deep conditioning treatment every month to rebuild the moisture and strength. Also, you would need to evaluate your product situation at home and might have to switch up a few things. It’s comparable to a diet: in order to see continued results you may need to make a few changes. So that being said, as fall is approaching follow these steps for beautiful and healthy hair: Schedule your consultation ↓ Reevaluate the condition of your hair ↓ Get rid off dead ends ↓ Step up your product game ↓ Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate Ready? Jennifer Aniston by Alexei Hay for Elle Magazine It used to be that when you reached a certain age you were destined for your mother's haircut. But is there such thing as an age appropriate haircut? In this week’s blog post, Fabio Scalia explains if the relation between the length of your hair and your age in number should matter. “I’m not a believer that women should shorten their hair to correspond with the number of birthdays they’ve celebrated. Your age shouldn’t be associated with the length of your hair. It’s more about your look and how you carry it. Sure, when you see a 50+ woman with hair down to her waist, all you see is probably very long hair. But it would also be very long on a young teenage girl. Instead of thinking whether your haircut is age appropriate or not, you should instead think if it’s look appropriate. Does your haircut go well with your facial features? With your personal style? With your career? There’s where I’d put my focus. A haircut is, however, a way to play with trends and a great style can make you feel up to date and current. As your hair ages, the texture, color and quality may change and those factors should be taken into consideration when cutting and coloring your hair. You can wear a beautiful dress, but if you feel uncomfortable with it, you will look ridiculous. Same goes with hair. That’s why my final suggestion is to consult with your stylist to come up with a style that will make you look and feel like the best version of yourself! Is your haircut appropriate for your look? Style by Luis Miller The idea of mastering perfectly loose curls can be more than intimidating. As summer is approaching, the beachy and wavy style feels just right in time. In this week’s blog post, we’ve asked our celebrity stylist, Luis Miller, how to get the perfect messy waves – no beach trip required. I would start with completely dry and clean hair so you could rock the finished look for 3-4 days. I usually go over the strands with heat protectant spray and a paddle brush to give it more shine and smoothness. Thereafter, I start sectioning the hair from the neck up, approximately  1 inch wide sections. The most important thing is not how you section the hair, it’s how much you wrap around the wand. The bigger the section you wrap around, the looser the curls will be. For this particular style, one inch of hair should be just right. When it comes to choosing the wand of the curling iron, I’d choose the size 1- 1¼ for short hair and 1 ¼ - 1 ½  for longer manes. If your hairstyles don’t tend to hold, you can spray the strands with a light hairspray before wrapping it around the curling iron. You want to alternate directions, meaning if you wrap one section back, you want to wrap the next one forward. Once you get to the front of your hair, those sections are extra important since they frame the face, and you want those to be wrapped away from it. When hair is completely curled, I spray light hairspray all over and then comb it with a wide tooth comb. I finish with a styling product like Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray or Sea Salt Spray and shake it with my fingers. To maintain the look as long as possible, I would sleep with a high bun. Also, use a soft bristle brush and dry texturizing spray when needed. – Luis Miller Schedule your appointment with us today in Soho Schedule your appointment with us today in Brooklyn Heights Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York.
